I just bought a self-propelled, walk behind lawn mower and as I was almost done cutting my half acre lawn, it started sputtering and stopped. I look in the gas tank and it looked like there was some gas in there but I added more. Should a gas tank that size be able to cut a full half acre?

Answer
If you walk fast.OOps self propelled you are pushing it.

What is the best riding mower?

Adam

My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
That cub is a hard mower to beat. I think I would look and see how much to repair it first.

does the grass left behind from the mower kills the grass underneath it?

R-Dog

you know when like your bag is full and the grass starts leaving a little trail behind the wheels, does that grass kill the grass underneath it or no?

i don't think it does but my mom thinks it does and i just want to explain to her that it doesnt or otherwise the riding lawn mowers would bag there grass...

am i right or wrong on this?

Answer
the lumps on the grass shade it, and if the grass under the lump can't get sunlight, it dies.... if you're leaving lumps, you need to cut more often so the grass isn't so high when you DO cut it... or you're cutting when it's wet with dew or rain and it's clumping up due to the wetness.... either way, you need to rake that stuff up or get a bagger.... lots of riding mowers DO bag the grass....

and uh, MOM's are always RIGHT...... *smile*........

I would like to know how much for a small yard, medium yard, and large yard. (there is alot of medium yards in my neighboor hood)

Answer
Hello
It depends on how large the yard is . i would say for a medium sized yard i would charge at least $35.00 for a large yard $45.00 & an extra large yard $55.00. You want to be able to fix the tractor if somethingg goes wrong with it. Also you need to provide the oil & gas so i believe these to be good prices. Good Luck

Above link is to the Pic of droppings

Facts: droppings are dark. about an inch long and almost everyone has a white portion on the end.
They afe in one area only...about a foot diameter.

Place:
In a small enclosed room behind our garage
Where the hot water heater and air conditioner are.

Conditions: There have been a lot of bugs around our house including many many garden variety spiders that have huge webs, because our lawn this year has been cut infrequently, due to lawn mower breaking 3 times.

Other info: Live in North Georgia.
Have never seen rat or mouse droppings anywhere indoors.

We sealed off every pipe or electrical entrance to his room 2 years ago.
The outside door to this room is well sealed we believe.
The inside door leads to the garage and it has no door sweep.
However we have not found any of these droppings in the garage yet.

My husband was in this room 2 -3 weeks ago to get the weed eater and there was no dropping then. It was also much warmer oit.

We are not sure if its snake, lizard, rat or mouse or other. I've included a pic. As you can see almost every piece has white on it. My dad says mouse, my husband says snake or lizard and my neighbor says bat.

Thank you all.

Answer
it's def. NOT from a snake. snakes don't eat that often.

How much would it cost to put a diesel engine in a riding lawn mower?

Jamaal

I have a riding lawn mower but I think I will need a new engine so I have a gas engine but how much would it cost to put in a diesel engine?
Well are there lawn mowers that even run on diesel?

Answer
Not worth the conversion, just get a new motor or mower. And yes they do make diesel lawn tractors

How much can you sell a riding lawn mower with a bad engine for?

Olunde

We have a Troy Built riding lawn mower that needs some engine work. We don't feel like messing around with the repairs, so we were just going to sell the body.

What would be a reasonable price to ask for?

Answer
I like the other answer about subtracting 10% for each year and then the cost of the repairs - but I would argue that you may still have trouble selling it at that price.

When I put myself in the buyer's position, I can't help but think that there should also be an additional incentive for me to purchase a non-working item. Yes, theoritically, I would be made whole by deducting the cost to repair - but that is just an estimate. If I'm going to take the additional risk of buying a non-working item then there should be a little extra cushion in it. If for nothing else than to protect me in the event that the repairs go over budget.

How about
- Take 10% off for each year
- Take off the cost to repair
- Take off an additional 5 to 10% since it isn't currently working.

Im 14 years old and am looking to start a lawn mowing buisness this spring. Although, i have no idea what kind of lawn mower to get (push, ride on, etc.) as well as what brand to get. Also how much should i charge per lawn? Last thing, whatelse besides lawn mowing should i offer to clients?
thankyouu, all answers are appreciated.

Answer
A riding lawnmower will do larger yards faster, but you have to consider how to get it to your job site. If you live in a city and the lots are small, go with a push mower because you can get closer to fences and around trees. You might also want to offer trim hedges. You could consider doing evergreen trees shaping them, if you can find some to practice on.

How is it legal for the city to come on your property and take everything you own.?

Keith

I live in a small town in Kansas and the city came in and took everything that I owned and tossed it away like trash, I had 3 pickup trailers full of iron to take to scrap yard one was hooked up to my pickup, they took my push mowers, weed eaters, iron racks full of new metal, 2 tire racks full of new and used tires, pickup tool boxes with tools, my cutting torch and cart, rotor tillers, and riding lawn mowers, trash can cart, lawn and garden tools, log splitter, pull camper used for storage, tool shed, oilfield tools and pumps, fencing and poles, firewood, wood burning heater for my house, fuel tank, ladder for shop, row boat no motor on it and fishing gear, tail gate for my truck, if it was outside they took, plus wifes garden hose, and my kids bikes, an mini bike, took my fence down and drove in the yard with big trucks and tractors, 6 sheets of new 1/4 inch steel 2'by6',

Answer
This doesn't happen without notifying you.

I'm sure the town has warned you several times of a thing such as a blight ordinance, and that if you didn't clean it up, they would.

You would have had plenty of time to haul those trailers to the scrap yard to turn them. Among other things.

Answer
I can't think of ANY part that you can take off the bike for a go cart, and the only part off the mower you can use is the motor, so my answer is NO.

They USED to sell kart frame kits that you could weld together yourself in mags like popular mechanics.

I have built a few carts when I was a kid. They were ugly as H***, but I had fun.

When did did the use of hearing protection become common while shooting?

Jubeikiba5

just curious

Answer
the prevalence of hearing protection did not become common all at once.

What you need to understand is the cultural and technological changes that went on.

#1 Where we shoot

Shooting outside is a lot less noisy, so as the opportunities to go out to the woods and shoot got lesser and indoor shooting ranges became more and more common the use of hearing protection went up

#2 As the types of guns changed, so did the desire for hearing protection.

It used to be people would practice a TON with 22LR firearms. Doing that (especially if done outdoors) reduces greatly the need for hearing protection. Now people who are just beginning to shoot turn their nose up at the lowly 22LR and think they all need to get a 'Glock 40'. Those who do know shooting make the decision to shoot the ammo they will be carrying. That wasn't always the case.

For a long time most police and even most people had a 38 special revolver for defense. Even when the first 357 magnums came about they were in big framed revolvers, the cartridge really didn't become popular for police use and until it was available in a medium frame revolver, which wasn't as durable. However that was okay because the plan was to have people shoot 38 special for practice and only load 357 magnum for carry, yet very rarely shoot it. When the cutting edge hand gunners of the day decided it may be a good idea to at least practice SOME with their 357 magnum ammo, they found it to be a real ear-ringer, and actually adpoted the practice of sticking empty 38 special cases into their ears as a 'field expedient' way to have ear plugs. Other shooters who were just shooting 38 special rounds would get mad but they'd end up doing the same. Some guys got a bit smarter and started to pack cotton balls in their ears. (This was for the most part happening in outdoor ranges). As more and more shooters started using real blasters, and as shooting moved indoors cotton balls and empty cartridge cases were replaced by actual hearing protection

#3 changes in technology

I touched on this a bit above talking about shooters using cotton balls and cartridge cases. There just weren't many options for hearing protection. But technology has advanced, and not just in ear protection. For starters MEDICAL technology advanced, and now we understand more about the mechanics of hearing loss. We have seen the guys who said they didn't want to wear hearing protection now live with deafness or permanently ringing ears. We know hearing loss doesn't come from a single one time exposure, but is from an accumulation of long time exposures at even just loud levels.

Further, we have all sorts of other noisy changes in our lives. In the 1940s and 50s people didn't go to concerts with speakers 10 feet high blasting out base waves. Heck personal music devices were not very loud, and they sure didn't blow the sound directly into your ear. People mowed their lawns with push power mowers, stirred their cookie dough with spoons, and raked leaves. Now people put ear-buds right into their ears and crank up the music, people mow the lawn with noisy riding tractors, and handle their leaves with leaf-blowers, and stir their cookie dough with food mixers.

We are exposed to a constant barrage of fairly loud noises. The average office employee of 1951 could go shoot his 38 special 100 rounds every month at an outdoor sand-pit and face very little cumulative noise damage. The same person today already has a ton of loud noise exposure, even by going to the same sand-pit and shooting 100 rounds the cumulative damage potential is much higher.

And then add in #1 and #2 above...The modern man isn't going to the sand-pit, he is going to the indoor range. And the modern guy isn't going to shoot 100 rounds of 38 special, he's going to fire off 357 magnum rounds (or the guy next to him is)

Need to buy a new lawn mower that is easy for a woman and/or adolescent to operate. Need easy start mechanism and easy operation of mower body.

Answer
Well, Consumer Reports just did a rating on lawn mowers in their May 2007 issue. It seems that the self-propelled mowers are much more repair prone than push types though they are easier to operate. Lawn Boy is reported as being the most repair prone push mower brand. Here are their best buys for small, level laws (like we have in CA) Cub cadet, craftsman, Black & Decker and Homelite. They seem to like the cub cadet because it is lighter, combines mowing with fine bagging and a premium engine. Among the electric mowers they like the Black & Decker.

The Toro, Craftsman and Yard Machines come with electric starting.

Can I sodder a bar to my lawn mower?

Mike

I bought an used lawn mower that has the option of bagging what you mow but it didn't come with a bag. I have a bag from a different lawn mower that would work great if I can attach a metal bar to my mower so the bag has something to keep it in place.

I've tried using JB Weld glue and it holds the bar in place for about 3 times mowing, but then the glue breaks. Wire welding the bar onto the mower would be a great option but I don't have a wire welder and I don't know anyone that does. Could I sodder the bar to the mower?

Answer
Probably not. Like the JB weld, it will not last.

You might try wrapping wire around the joint you're trying to establish, THEN use the JB weld. That way the JB is doing more of a job of keeping the wire wrapping in place while the wire does the job of holding the metal in place. OR make or buy a clamp that can hold the bar in place.

But why not get a mulching blade for your lawn mower? That way you don't have to worry about catching grass and filling up the land fill.

Hope this helps.

'av'a g'day mate.

best lawn mower for 1 acre image

Hi, it's pretty much lawn mowing season here and our current tractor lawn mower broke down. It was a hand-me-down and didn't handle well in the first place, but now we need a replacement.

What are some suggestions? In terms of brands in general, durability, easy handling, ease of use, and good maneuverability (I'm a pretty small female and am generally not that great with mechanics but our yard is over 1 acre and I'd feel bad if my dad were the only one in the house who could easily use the thing).

Completely new to buying riding lawn mowers so help would be welcome. If you recommend one you use yourself, could you also include a price range and how many years you've had it for and how much you use it?

Answer
Consumer Reports Magazine in their May issue has an article that rates and compares riding mowers and hand mowers. You might want to get a copy and read it. It is also available on their website for a fee. If I remember right their top rated tractor mower was a John Deere model priced around $2000?

Sam N

When i mow my yard and my customers yards i want the best results for them as well as me. I want to know the ideal mowing deck height so the grass isn't too short or too long.

Answer
Honestly, it all depends on what type of grass you are mowing. Bermuda and zoysia can be cut really short. And all others (too many to mention) have other varying heights.

Lawn Mower question, if you have experience mowing lawns?

You may be

For just a small lawn, do you think a reel mower is ok, or will they get rusted up and hard to push after a while.

What do you think, reel, electric, gas.

I need to buy one, but it's just a small lawn about 20 feet by 15 feet.

Answer
It depends on how big your lawn is, and what type of grass you have.

My old lawn was about the same size as yours and I used a reel mower very effectively on it. But with some "cool season" grasses (bluegrass, rye, fescue), you really have to keep up with it. Taller grass can be dificult to cut w/ a reel mower.

If you have a Southern grass, like Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine - they are great mowers. You'd definitely be better off using a reel mower on one of these.

You can pick up a new reel mower for about $60, so it's not a big investment. A gas or electric will run you considerably more.

estimate how long it would take one person to mow a football field. assume that the mower moves 1km/h?

best 54 lawn mower on ... GX345 54
best 54 lawn mower image

Rodiah Raz

1)estimate how long it would take one person to mow a football field using an ordinary home lawn mower. assume that the mower moves with a 1km/h speed and has a 0.5 width.
2)the diameter of the moon is 3480 km. what is the volume of the moon? how many moons would be needed to create a volume equal to that of earth?

Answer
A Canadian Football Field is 65 yards wide, by 150 yards long.

There are 3 feet in a yard, 12 inches in a foot, and 2.54 cm in an inch.

In other words, the field is 59.436 metres wide, and 137.16 metres long.

The most efficient method would be to multiply the width and length to get area, then divide by mower width to get distance.

Area = 8152 metres squared.

Mower path lenght = 8152 / 0.5 m = 16304 metres, or about 16 km.

16 km divided by 1 km / hr = 16 hours.

Or, if you keep all the precision in your calculator, 16 hr, 18 min, 16.14 seconds.

For the moon, Volume = 4/3 pi r^3, and r = d/2.

The radius of earth is approx 6378 km.

Volume of moon: 2.206 x 10 ^ 10 km^3.

Volume of earth: 1.086x10^12 km^3.

Ratio: 49.24 moons could fit inside earth, if some moons were ground up to fit in between other moons..

If you consider "packing fraction", leaving space between solid whole moons, then you could fit about 74% or less than the 49 .24 above. ie: 36 or fewer whole moons would fit inside an earth sized spherical container.

What brand of a zero turn mower doe's the best job at cutting grass?

Steve H

I now have a zero turn mower but if I go full speed it doe's not cut the grass perfect, there are some blades of grass that don't get cut.

Answer
I have a Hustler Z turn mower. They were the inventor of the zero turn lawn mower and I love it. Mine is a Fastrak model, which is the consumer model made for people cutting once or twice a week with lawns around 1 to 5 acres. The cost is fairly hefty ($5,300) but not much more than the much less quality Zturn mowers you will see a Lowe's or Home Depot. It gets much more expensive if you are to look into the professional lawn mowers. ($6-8k) Since mine mows with a 54 inch cut at 8 mph it works great.

If your yard is flat you can go with a larger cut, but if you have a hilly landscape you will want a smaller deck.
Something else to consider is what brand of Motor. You will usually find a choice of motor in a higher end mower. I have looked around and if you check out many of the professional landscapers around here you will find what ever brand lawn mower - the engines are usually made by Kawasaki. I guess that they have the most torque.

To keep the cost down I actually went in partners with a neighbor friend. I wouldn't recommend that to just anyone, but we wrote up a contract and it works for us.

Best of luck in your research.

Australia: Can anyone recommend a good lawn mower 'edger'?

Peter H

Just a middle-range one, not particularly expensive.
Preferably one you actually use that is good.
Aka a 'whipper snipper' or lawn 'trimmer' or something - I DON'T KNOW... just looking for a good brand name

Answer
I have a "Little Wonder" which were/are put out by MTD; a large Mower etc Dealer. Were made in USA and plenty of parts available if you need but rarely have any trouble. If you need it to cut back edges along paths etc it's the best one I have used, better the VICTA and most other edgers. I have 620ft of edging (in my old language) to do every now and then. Easy to use and a cinch to maintain. If you're looking for a Whipper Snipper go for a "Styll" brand and don't waste your money on the cheaper brands that are available in Bunnings and the like. Talk to a trusted mower repair shop proprietor if you know of one, as they can normally in all honesty, can tell you what brands they recommend and what cheaper brands to stay away from as most aren't repairable etc. Be careful if you're looking for an electric 240vAC one as they are in my mind not worth the bother of having to run out 50ft of lead etc, they are also too dangerous in my mind as an Electrician as you can cut the power lead easily and that adds a risk to life if you don't have an earth leakage circuit breaker or similar to save you from bigger problems, even so these electric ones are in some cases claimed to be "Double Insulated" etc. I personally wouldn't take the risk having seen some of "their" Double Insulated methods.

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can do it! You didn't say if it's a push or a rider, either way it's simple! If you have a push mower first remove the air filter, tip the mower over (with a bucket under to catch the diesel) getting as much out as possable. Some engine oil will run out that's why you removed the air filter to keep oil out of the element. Refill the tank with fresh gasoline. You may have to use a starting fluid (sparingly) to counteract the diesel in the carb, but it will start. run the tank dry and you should be over the crisis of diesel fuel. Oh don't forget to replace the clean air filter!

what kind of gas do you use in a new kohler engine lawn mower?

Susan

It is a new Lawn Boy mower bought at Home Depot.
I heard on the radio that the unleaded gas with ethanol is bad for mowers.

Answer
Hi Susan

If you can buy 100 percent gasoline, that is what you should use. It runs better and is not as bad about gumming up your carburetor as ethanol gas is. There is a station near me that has non ethanol gasoline so there are a few around. If you are going to store your mower over the winter it is best to add an additive to prolong the fuel's life. A couple of these are STP fuel treatment, Sta-bil.

Hope this helps

Johnny

I dont know how to use my self propelled lawn mower?

This is my first time that I will have to mow the lawn by myself. I have no clue how to use my lawn mower. It is self propelled. Do I need oil and gas and stuff and how do I operate it? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I really need help!

Answer
Yes... you will need to buy a gallon of gas from the store. Most of the time people use this red heavy plastic container with a spout of some sort on it. Whoever cut your grass before bought and stored gas in something, so the red container is probably around somewhere. Take the cap off of likely gas containers and sniff for strong gas smell. There are precautions when getting a gallon of gas. Your container goes on the floorboard - never the seat. Windows are kept open for ventilation and NO smoking by anyone in the car. The inside of your gas container should have nothing but a tiny amount of gas in it. No leaves or dirt and especially no water.Empty out the tiny bit of residual gas out in a grassy spot away from any buildings. If the container is dirty with leaves and soil discard the container and get a new one. You should use about 1 gallon for a normal yard and will have to refill your mower gas tank about 2 maybe 3 times out of this one gallone. The gas tank on the side of the mower is not large and be careful not to over fill and over flow. Store you container in a safe dry spot.
Don't worry about oil at this time.
The lawn mower: You cannot learn how to do this over the internet. Starting a lawnmower is going to flip you out if you have never started one before. You need someone to come show up how to do it all. A neighbor is a good choice. It does not have to be a man. Most women end up being lawn maintenance connoisseurs as life progresses. If you have relatives ask one of them to come over and show you what to do. You will probably need to be shown twice, so if you do not get it the first time, don't worry about it. Someone from your church is another option.
You are going to find cutting grass very awkward if you have never done it before. But after one spring and summer of doing it you might find it a satisfying chore. You see results immediately and it takes a little effort (but not much with a self-propelled) and is exercise. I tend to zen out when cutting grass.
I'm sorry I cannot just tell you how to pull the cord while holding in the bar and getting your idle correct and all that. Your mentor will show you All this. One other thing: Before you start mowing search through your yard for pieces of wire, metal and/or glass. Things flying out of the side of the mower with the grass cuttings can be dangerous. You do not want to find this out for yourself. Flying rocks can break windows. There are all kinds of precautions to take. Safety is a big priority.
Good luck and do not get discouraged. If you have a little daughter now or someday make sure she knows how to do mow the lawn , and change car tires and how to check ALL the fluids in a car.

What does it mean when a guy moves too fast?

Auburn

I am very worried about my friend. She just started dating this guy and he's buying her a ton of gifts. For example, a new lawn mower and new eyeglasses. He buying expensive gifts almost every day. They hardly know each other. Oh, and the guy is still legally married, but claims to want a divorce. I just have a bad feeling about their relationship. What does it mean when a guy buys a woman many expensive gifts without getting to know her first?

Answer

Like if you were to trick out like a racing lawn mower but not to that extent

Answer
If you make sure that you increase the blade speed along with the drive speed and use stronger, higher quality mowing blades it's possible to trick it out and actually have it mow decently.

You just don't want to increase the drive speed and have the deck speed stock or what you mow will like sh*t. Take my advice about the blades though, I have a friend that hopped up his mower but lost a stock blade and nearly killed a friend when the blade broke!

Have fun but be safe. Peace!

is it possible to make a racing lawn mower with a rear engine mower?

.

So my boss at work gave me a john deere rx73 rear engine lawn mower, The mower deck was already off so I decided I just wanted to try to make it into a racing mower. Is it possible to do a pulley swap on one of these mowers that have the engines in the back? If so how??

Answer
I don't see why not, but I'd loose the belt and transaxle set up and opt for a live axle and horizontal shaft engine set up like you'd find in a regular racing go kart, But that's just me, Your not the first one to do it. the rear engine set up is quite popular, Basically you need to just find and change the pulleys, put a smaller one the transaxle and a larger one on the engine, its not rocket science, Why not go to one of the many racing lawn mower forums these people will give you all the info you need.
