I need help with striping my lawn and making it look professional?

best zoysia lawn mower on fine-bladed zoysia with exceptional shade and wear tolerance
best zoysia lawn mower image

Aztec

We have about 1 acre of land and we use a cub-cadet lawn mower. I have tried to stripe it but I cant get it to look like the pros. Is my technique wrong? Is there something i could make to pull behind the tractor to bend the grass down? That is what they do at the golf course. I mow it at about 4.5 inches. Any tips?

Answer
Stripes in grass work best on fine textured turf such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bent or Fescue. If you are growing a turf that requires a mowing height of 4.5 inches such as St Augustine or Bahia, then striping is tougher.

Be sure the blades are very sharp. Mow often and make marks somewhere unobtrusive so that you are mowing in the same direction in the same place every time you mow. Mow often. It is the repetition of direction that eventually puts stripes in turf..

Reel mowers often have rollers behind them to prepare the surface for playing. The rollers should not be too heavy to prevent soil compaction.

Remember, the striping in turf is much more visible from above and on TV, you may have more striping than you can see from ground level.

how do the shades on the baseball fields come to appear on the grass?

benedict k

i'd like the grass on my yard to look like a baseball field..by using just my push lawn mower how can i make shaded lanes on my yard?

Answer
I just ran across this webpage the other day which will answer your question. Part of the answer is here, but check the source for the web address for the full article and other links.

"The designs are created through a process called lawn striping. To create lawn-striping designs of your own, you only need two pieces of equipment: a lawnmower and a roller. Many professional groundskeepers use old-fashioned reel mowers to cut a stadium's grass. Attached just behind the blades of the mower is a lawn roller that bends the grass down. Some lawnmower manufacturers are beginning to make riding mowers with full-width rollers mounted to the rear of the mower to make this task easier.

Whatever pattern you make is revealed by the light shining off of the bent grass. A checkerboard design is created by passing over the grass in side-by-side rows, first going north to south, then making east-to-west stripes in the grass that intersect the north-south stripes. In this way, you alternate the way the grass bends. When you look at your lawn, the stripes of grass leaning away from you will look lighter. This lighter green is caused by the sunlight reflecting off the entire blade of grass. In the darker green stripes, formed by the blades of grass leaning toward you, the sunlight is reflecting only off the tips of the blades.

Different grasses can be used to accentuate the striping effect, including rye grass, fescue and bluegrass. You won't see such a big contrast between the stripes' colors if you have a warm-season grass, such as Bermuda or zoysia. Watering the grass after mowing can make your pattern stand out even more. "

I want to mulch my lawn. Do I need a new lawn mower or can I just put a mulching blade on my old one?

BB

The lawn mower I already have is a plain push mower. It doesn't have a side chute. So, if I keep the bagging chute closed and install a mulching blade, will it function as a mulching mower?

Or is there a lot more to mulching than simply having a mulching blade and keeping the chute closed?

Thanks!

Answer
Your bog standard push mower is no good for mulching. You'll have to get a new one with a mulch chute.

How do you use your electric lawn mower?

We received a electric lawn mower as a gift (it's a second hand mower) my husband has been using it for several months. The only way he can use it without cutting the electrical cord is pushing and pulling the mower with one hand while pulling, pushing, picking the cord with the other. I think it takes double the time cutting the lawn with this machine....is there a tip that you can give us? maybe something we don't know, like a retractable electrical cord...I don't know....something that you can use to be able to push the machine with both hands

Answer
BTW "The Man": 'Electric' would mean..... electricity. 'Battery-powered' would mean.... battery. DUH.

I have an electric; takes a few uses to get the hang of it. Most have a handle that 'flips' from one side to the other, so that the cord stays on the same side of the mower, and you don't have to walk backward, or drag the mower - both of which can be dangerous. Check your mower to see if it has a hinge at the bottom, where the handle attaches to the mower. If so, then you should also have a lever that will unlock the handle and allow you to flip it over to the other side.

Once you figure that out: start mowing closest to where you've plugged in, and walk away from it; make sure that where the cord plugs into the handle stays closest to the 'plug in' point at your house. Then, as you mow further away, the cord stays on the grass that's already been mowed.

How many amps is needed for a good electric lawn mower?

Nicole B

We've got a very small yard of bermuda grass. We're currently shopping for electric lawn mowers, but don't know what an acceptable amount of amps would be? We saw one in our price range with 6.5 amps, but for $40 more, we can get a 9 amp mower. Is there a big difference between the two? Would I need more amps? And is it worth the $40 price difference? Thanks so much!

Answer
With your very small yard you will not need the higher amp model. You need to keep the grass at a reasonable height each time you mow. In other words do not let it get too long before you mow. That is what will cause a strain on the smaller motor. The difference between the two motors you are looking at is very small. The 6.5 amp is approximately 1/2 horsepower and the 9 amp is approximately 3/4 horsepower. So that is very little difference. I think you should save the 40 bucks for something else. would the safety switch on seat for lawnmower prevent spark?

rokinstar9

i have my johndeere 111 project finally finished and i have been finding a new problem each time.

New question: if the safety switch is not being pressed on enough will it cause the engine to spin but not start, because the engine spins with me not on it, just not sparking the fuel i believe. It might be a bad magneto or something.

So what does the safety switch on the seat do exactly?

Answer
that is correct. safety switch prevents spark. It is made to be so that if you get off a moving mover it will shut off and stop. You can pull out a switch and connect 2 wires on it together. that way its always on.

It's one of the ones with those blades that spin when you push it

Answer
No real market for this kind of thing, unless it was pre 1920, someone might give 20 bucks for it because all they want it for is a lawn ornament to put next to the steel milk cans. Collectors sometimes lay out some decent money for the ones that were converted to power mowers by industrious homeowners who had a subscription to Popular Science back then, but it's hit and miss because the creativity of the individual conversion is what drives the price there.

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.

Dice K 12

How much money does it take to start a small one or two person landscaping buisness. this is without any college business credits. you figure one nice mower, leaf blower, weed wacker and all other necissary tools. how big a loan did you have to take out?

Answer
If you want to start a business you need commercial equipment. A commercial mower is a lot more than 2000. I recently bought a exmark turf tracer HP which isn't the biggest model made and it was about $6,000 When I bought a Kubota zero turn a few years ago it was 13,000 dollars. If you aren't doing commercial lots you don't need a huge zero turn. A walk behind will work fine with a stand on attachment so you don't have to walk. You have to locate a dealer that sells commercial mowers, you can finance the mower through them. If you want the best blower and weedeater you need to buy STIHL brand equipment. Our STIHL backpack blowers were 500 dollars and weedeaters were 2-300 dollars. Then you need your truck and trailer which could cost up to 60,000 dollars if you want a nice truck and trailer. I'd get a truck with a diesel engine in it, even though its more expensive the gas milage is better and they are a lot more reliable when you are going to be using them for heavy duty work. Then you need insurance which will be a few thousand dollars per year.

Lawn and Landscape work is a high demand industry. If you do good affordable work you will be fine.

Unless you already have contracts lined up you will need to advertise. People don't usually look in the classifieds first. They talk to friends/neibors who have had work done with a company and if that person was satisfied they will give the potential client your information and they will call you.

What have the English done for Americans?

Serenity

I constantly hear the English b**** and complain about the US and how they don't like us etc, but honestly, what the hell have they done for us? If it weren't for the US, they'd still being speaking German right now.

Answer
Serenity my dear, its people like you who give the USA a bad reputation. You have just been ignorant and big mouthed swearing and is under the misaphrehension that US is the best place on earth with no problems..

Did you hear about the bigot who hates all things English? He makes a good living in the Concreting business, because almost everything in the City depends on this industry. It's just a pity that reinforced concrete was invented by W.B. Wilkinson in Newcastle, England.

Our bigot's home uses electric power generated by steam turbines, which were invented by Sir Charles Parsons. Many of his home appliances use electric motors, which were invented by Londoner Michael Faraday. These range from vacuum cleaners, the invention of Englishman Hubert Booth, to sewing machines, invented by Englishman Charles Weisenhall back in 1755.

However, not all of his appliances run on electric motors. There's his Microwave Oven, based on the Magnetron invented by Sir John Randall and Dr H A H Boot at Birmingham University. His modern Central Heating unit, designed by Englishman A H Barker, and even his TV set, the brainchild of Englishman Shelford Bidwell. Even the television's production depended on the invention of the cathode-ray tube by London physicist Sir William Crookes.

All of these things reminded our bigot too much of England, so he turned on his radio for news from another country more to his liking. It didn't help much though, because he remembered that satellite radio transmitters are powered by fuel cells invented by the English chemist Francis T Bacon.

He thought of expressing his frustration by writing an angry letter. But it wouldn't go anywhere without the postal system, created in London by Sir Rowland Hill. That is, unless he chose to send his letter by e-mail on a computer - the brainchild of Englishman Sir Charles Babbage.

Our bigot then briefly considered getting away from it all - flying off to some remote place with nothing to remind him of English genius. But then he recalled that modern jet aircraft engines were designed by English test pilot Sir Frank Whittle.

He then decided to do some home chores, so he thought about washing the dishes - but his kitchen sink is made of stainless steel, invented by Englishman Sir Harry Brearly. To make matters worse, he noticed that his favourite and most useful kitchen utensils were made of plastic, the brainchild of Birmingham professor Alexander Parkes.

So, desperate to avoid the brilliance of the English, he headed out doors - passing on the way his modern WC, designed by Londoner Alexander Cummings. Once outside, he noticed that the lawn was a bit overgrown because he couldn't bring himself to use the lawn mower, originally designed by Edwin Budding of Gloucestershire.

Our bigot, now completely distracted by anger, turned around and walked straight into one of his prized rose bushes, badly scratching his arms and hands. Briefly, he was glad that his Tetanus shots were up to date - until he remembered that immunisation was discovered by Dr Edward Jenner, another Gloucestershire man.

This was all too much - All of this contact with English brilliance just about gave the poor chap a heart attack. It's just as well that he had previously been fitted with a cardiac pacemaker, the invention of English surgeon W H Walshe.

Feeling very run-down, emotionally depressed and really quite ill, our bigot decided that he'd better go to the doctors for a check-up. After a breif consultation, the doctor announced that he needed an urgent blood transfusion to save his life. Fortunately, this was quickly arranged and our bigot survived - thanks mostly to James Blundell, who pioneered blood transfusions at Guy's Hospital, London.

"...but apart from ALL that... What, EXACTLY, have the English ever done for us, eh?"

What is this obsession the USA has with huge lawns?

AskZilla

They're a tremendous waste of water, time and resources.

Answer
Original American gardens were just door gardens, small outside the door where medical plants were grown and a few misc others. The "commons" was the large green area, communal, where the animals were grazed. As people moved from the crowded urban areas to where they could legally own land (took money to do so) these folks also had the money to travel abroad and saw English Country homes. Suddenly they wanted larger homes on more land surrounded by their own pastures and lawn around their own homes. This was a sign you had "made it." As the middle class began to own homes, they wanted their own little bit of the wealthy person's lawn around their homes. As building sites grew in size......move to suburbia.....people discovered lawns make a pretty darn good ground cover. Suddenly the golf associations years of developing mowers and fertilizers for lawns realizes they have a burgeoning market, homeowners! As lawn growing became easier, lawns increased in size.. Now with urban sprawl and limiavailabilityailibility, especially in the west, but also overtaxed water treatment plants elsewhere, the need to conserve water comes to bear. Also EPA is concerned about all the chemicals being applied to lawns that wash off and into street storm drainage and into streams causing massive algae blooms.

Large lawns will be limited to areas of the country where there is sufficient natural rainfall to support them. In my area of the SW, lawns are disappearing rapidly as water restrictions make watering enough difficult.

How much motor oil do I need to refill this lawn mower?

I am fully changing the old motor oil in my CRAFTSMAN Rotary Lawn mower.
This 625-series, Briggs & Stratton motor turns a 22 inch blade to a side-discharge.

I need to know how much (I am using 30 weight) motor oil I need to buy to fully refill this motor after I drain it.
Thanks for knowledgeable replies.

Answer
Sir;
For security reasons Unplug the wire from the spark plug first.

On this type of engine you need to know that the drain plug is under the engine and you must have the engine high enough for you to be able to reach that plug.
I believe american ounces are the same as Canadian.
Just make sure you dealer can confirm this OK.
(( Do not Tilt the engine from side to side)) as the oil will go up the oil galleries and will foul the combustion chamber and you will not be able to start the Motor.

It is either a 1/4 inch drain plug hole where you will need an extension of about 6 inches long from a ratchet set to unscrew that plug.
On some briggs engines some drain plugs are to be removed with octagonal Type Allen wrench or a small straight Allen wrench where you will use a wrench to leverage the removal. _____!

Once the oil is drained re-install the plug Tight, Insert 15 and a Half ounces of SAE oil 30 (detergent) oil or 10w30 sae oil.
NEVER USE A NON DETERGENT OIL.
To make sure you have the right amount of oil use the dip stick half way in the fill up and you will see the indicator mark that it is missing or over filled. Overfilled by ( ½ ) an once is not to worry about.

That engine like I said takes 15 ½ ounces of oil. Or metric just about 750ml from a 1000 ml bottle.
Then reinsert your spark plug wire.
This should be done every 10 to fifteen hours of operation.
The same applies for the sharpening of the blade and the balance of the cutter.

The Wilson Manufacturing Company uses a machine to stamp out parts for lawn mowers. On average, the machine wi?

Ruby

The Wilson Manufacturing Company uses a machine to stamp out parts for lawn mowers. On average, the machine will produce 7 defective parts for each 1,000 made. Using a direct variation formula, determine the number of defective parts that would be expected if the machine produced 7,000 parts.

Answer
Hi,
The direct variation formula is y = kx, where k is the constant of variation. In this case, the parts made is "x" and the defectives is "y." Plug your given points in to find the constant of variation.

7 = 1000k
1000k = 7
k = 7/1000

So now you found your constant of variation. You have also created your equation. Plug 7,000 for x to find out the number of defectives for the new one.

y = 7/1000 * 7000
y = 49

So if the machine produced 7,000 parts, 49 would be defective.

best lawn mower under 100 image

What about sources for straight forward solar powered products? Excluding toys, garden frogs and outdoorpath lights I have found few useful items for the home. What I have found are solar panels for under $100 each, inverters, rechargeable indoor lights and a few camping/RV products that are interesting. It seems to me that these could help me start to wean the family off the power company. I can't afford to go cold turkey and cover my roof with solar panels and I don't think the HOA would allow me to even if I could. Is anyone using solar on a small scale?

Answer
Solar panel technologys are advancing all the time. I could be wrong about this as it has been at least 6 months since I checked, but last time I checked, solar panels as we know them, the kind you put on your roof cant generate enough power to run a full household especially if you have kids, with various game consoles, TV's, lighting, cooking, fridges and so on, not to mention power tools like the electric lawn mower or sander! That is to say, they cant generate enough power unless you are willing to spend considerable monies on the bestest most up to date ones and you have plenty of roof and garden space to mount them on. Actually, it would be cheaper just to pay the bills over the next 30 or 40 years at present prices than to do something like that.

However, other ideas are more reasonable, I have seen people mount rectulanguler plastic tanks on their roof, paint the outside of them a matt black, and put a transparent layer over them. This heats the water inside, saving them on heating costs for bathing and for heating the home in the evening. the most expensive part of this is getting it mounted and the pump to pump the water around the house.

Another alternative, is the geo thermal approach. That is the idea where you replace your radiators and heating system all together with a set of coiled pipes going through out your house. These pipes then lead out to the back garden under the ground about 3 or 4 feet. The idea being that the ground at that dept is always of a constant temperture no matter the weather, so if the house gets too hot the pipes (which are filled with a water/antifreese solution and are not connected to the water system) transfer heat out of the house and under the ground outside, but if the house gets too cold, the pipes take the heat from under the ground outside, and bring it into the house. This however will make any heating or air conditioning system almost useless as your house will always stay at the same temperature. Again you need a pump to pump the solution in the pipes it round the house.

I am starting a local lawn mowing business 20-30 yards and am wondering what kind/type of mower will i need to get. I am 16 and am looking to by a truck too. For the lawn mower price range up to $1200. For the truck up to $8000. Also if i were to charge per sq. ft. what is a good unit price?

Answer
If you are planning on starting a lawn business, I assume you plan on making this a long term venture? If this is so, purchasing "cheap" equipment is a No No! If your gonna commit time and effort into doing a good job for your clients, you need to have at least a mid-priced, commercial grade mower, one that will last more than the 2 months you will get by purchasing a cheaper one. 20 - 30 yards a week is alot of wear and tear on the engine, power drive, cables, and pull string as well as the blade shaft. One week of this wear and tear mowing is as much as the normal homeowner would put on a mower in a "years" time. To keep from having to fix this cheaper mower when it breaks down you need a good one. If the mower isn't cutting, you aren't making any money, and not to mention having to deal with a few irate clients complaining that their lawns are looking scraggly and unmowed because you couldn't mow it that week. You need to at least spend $375.00 - $500.00 smackers on a semi-commercial mower. There are many brands that carry heavier built mowers and these include, Honda, Toro, and Snapper. These 3 are my only choices. Check out each brand and make sure you get one with at least 3.5 horsepower with 4.0 - 5.0 being even better yet. Make sure that you get one with a "rear" wheel power drive. The front wheel drives really suck and are hard to keep straight when putting "stripes" and "designs" on the turf. Mowing the tree wells (circle around base of trees) is more difficult as well. Always bag the clippings when mowing. The customer is paying for a clean, manicured yard and that is just what you should provide. Get a quality lawn edger as well. A sharp edge on the walkways and driveway gives that added clean cut appearance after you have left the property. And make sure to blow or sweep off the concrete walks, driveway, and patios of the spent clippings that have been thrown out from under the deck before leaving (this needs to be done lastly). And when you get the mower be sure that it is a 4 cycle engine (straight gas, no mix) it makes for faster and easier work not having to mix oil and gas all the time. Hope this has been helpful and good luck on your new venture. You will get a great sense of accomplishment from this type of work, not to mention a whole bunch of knowledge about turf, trees & shrubs, diseases, and insects. The best part is the $money$ that can be made if you get good at it...

...Added Info: You don't want to charge by the sq.ft. for your services. It's better to charge by each individual property. Naturally, the bigger the square footage of turf, the more you will charge (time is money). The local economy and the type of neighborhoods you will be working in will have alot to do with your price range. Naturally, higher class homes will bring in more cashflow. A standard price would be $100.00 a month for edging, mowing, and blowing off of the property. Tell the customer that you will spend 1 hr a week doing the work, 4 times a month, which comes out to to 4 hrs total work time. Which means that you are working at a $25.00 an hour rate, which is pretty good money for a 16 yr old. This of course, is for an average size yard with around 2,000 sq. ft. of turf. If its less or more you can adjust the price accordingly (up or down).

Wanted to know best and safest way to cut grass. What lawn mower buy and safety considerations.?

best lawn mower bagging on lawnreel

Rev. Dr. G

I am a retired college teaching professor, who has taken over raking leaves. Now want to go to cutting grass on lawn. The lawn is straight and small in front. In the back there really is not much grass. The lawn is more the crabgrass type. Even with the greatest of efforts, it will not get that "golf green" lawn look.

I am not interested in a riding lawn mower. Have talked to a couple of people. It looks like a push lawn mower with a bag is the way for me to go. Someone mentioned having one in which you do not have adjust the wheels.

Am concerned about what would be best to buy, where. Safety is also a major concern on how to adjust the blades, and any other matters should know about.

Tired of walking and thought practical exercise would be good. The mower would pay for itself soon.

Any suggestions about operating and buying a motorized push lawn mower would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
As long as I can remember my family has always used a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower. Our lawn has always looked picture perfect!!!

How to put in a lawn mower bag?

Emmanuel R

I have a bolens side discharge lawn mower, & I'm trying to mow my lawn but I don't know how to get this bag in, it's opening is way smaller then any other bags I have ever had, plus it's a side discharge, if you guys know any videos that would help or know exactly what I'm dealing with please help, thank you.

Answer
Look to the manufacturer for what to do. Do it on-line.
Are you sure it's the right bag and just as important are you sure that mower is made for a bag.
You just cant make a mower into one that holds the grass if it's not already capable of doing that.

Thermonuclear Fishing R errr, Used To be ...Us do some hot gear.
Electrofishing zaps 'em with volts but ain't legal most places.
Carbide in the water blows 'em up and stuns 'em. Net them off the top. Also not legal.
Used quite often for illegal salmon poaching. Chuck in a lump of carbide it makes acetylene gas like crazy and goes...BOOOOOOOM.
Salmon taking a late supper of freshly fallen lacewing and midge flies (traditional dish and rather nice actually with single malt whisky distillery effluent as befits a salmon of a particular social background) have been known to complain to the fisheries department but the guys there can't read salmon anyway so that comes to nothing.
Large bright lamps hung over the water with a net slung underneath which is raised when a sufficient quantity of fish is seen swimming beneath the light to justify missing a minute of the latest late night soap opera on the portable TV has been a successful method in many countries. In Malaysia there are Kelongs which are homes for a couple of families built on stilts in the water and having a large central or offset square for the net and an enormous light.

Cormorants can be very useful if they are well trained and keep bringing the fish back instead of trading them for smoked haddock or peanut butter but they come of age and sometimes disappear in hopes of seeing a girl friend and having fun. C'est la vie.
Bowfishing is popular amongst educated brown bears and mountain men but requires an assessment of the angle of deviation of a light ray as a result of refraction as it crosses the boundary of water and air.
Snells' Law is of particular relevance.

Long-line fishing, especially for eels,is common on the loughs of Ireland and in many other parts of the world for normally-shaped fish with curvy bits.
See my answer here for the paradisical exhilliration of a morning on a misty lough in green and beautiful Ireland with a long line a'waiting for the slow journey back to the shore with nothing but the sounds of the lough awaking in the morning and a promise of a lie in with the sweetest piece of Ireland that the dear country ever produced as long as there are enough eels to trade for a new lawn mower and a packet of biscuits.

I'll have to make them some fish pie to get it back now.

What are the origins of the lawn? Who invented it?

CVPI

Answer
They are actually considered "gardens"

Before the invention of mowing machines in 1830, lawns were managed very differently. Lawns belonging to wealthy people were sometimes maintained by the labour-intensive methods of scything and shearingâin most cases, however, they were pasture land which was maintained through grazing by sheep or other livestock. Areas of grass grazed regularly by rabbits, horses or sheep over a long period often form a very low, tight sward similar to a modern lawn. This was the original meaning of the word "lawn", and the term can still be found in place-names. Some forest areas where extensive grazing is practiced still have these semi-natural lawns. For example, in the New Forest, England, such grazed areas are common and are known as lawns, for example Balmer Lawn.

Lawns became popular in Europe from the Middle Ages onward. The early lawns were not always distinguishable from pasture fields. It is thought that the associations with pasture and the biblical connotations of this word made them attractive culturally. By contrast, they are little-known or used in this form in other traditions of gardening. In addition, the damp climate of maritime Western Europe made them easier to grow and manage than in other regions.

It was not until the Tudor and Elizabethan times that the garden and the lawn became a place to be loved and admired. Created as walkways and for play areas, the lawns were not as we envisage them today. They were made up of meadow plants, such as camomile, a particular favourite. In the early 1600s the Jacobean epoch of gardening began. It was during this period that the closely-cut "English" lawn was born. By the end of this period, the English lawn was the envy of even the French; it was also seen as a symbol of status by the gentry. In the early 1700s, gardening fashion went through a further change. William Kent and the age of Capability Brown were in progress, and the open "English" style of parkland was seen across Britain and Ireland. Lawns seemed to flow from the garden into the outer landscape.

During Victorian times, as more plants were introduced into Britain and the influence of France and Italy became prevalent, lawns became smaller as borders were created and filled with plants, statues, sculptures, terraces and water features, which started encroaching onto the area covered by the lawn. In the United States, it was not until after the Civil War that lawns began to appear outside middle-class residences. Most people did not have the hired labor needed to cut a field of grass with scythes; average home owners either raised vegetables in their yards or left them alone. If weeds sprouted that was fine. Toward the end of the 19th century, suburbs appeared on the American scene, along with the sprinkler, greatly improved lawn mowers, new ideas about landscaping and a shorter workweek.

Lawns do not have to be, and have not always been, made up of grass alone. Other plants for fine lawns in the right conditions are camomile and thyme. Some lawns, if grown in difficult conditions for grasses, become dominated by whatever weeds can survive there; these include clovers in dry conditions, and moss in damp shady conditions. In more recent times, especially in suburban residential areas, a lawn may refer to an area surrounding a home where some or all of the natural grass or sod has been removed and replaced with artificial turf, stones, mulch, or some other material determined by the homeowner to reduce maintenance and/or water consumption.

My 48'' lawn mower streaks the yard when i mow. I have changed the blades and they are good. Lawn mower repairman says the deck is not warped. Any idea?

Answer
Joe may have it here. Check the wheels height adjustment and make sure they are all the same from front to back and side to side. It is not much adjustment there but it will leave the streaks like you described if not exactly even. Another thought. Do you always mow the lawn the same way? If so, try mowing it a completely different pattern the next few times and see if this helps.
