Plz read, trying to join pool without my family, 15 yrs old?

Rosaline

I'm 15. ok so my neighborhood has a neighborhood pool that is open in the summer. It costs money, I believe $500 per household. So for the past 6 years we (my family) have joined the swimclub, but this year we aren't. We are going to the friggin NAC, this big athletic and swim club. But the pools are INDOOR. I don't want to spend my summer INDOORS!!! I want to be outside, where i can hear lawn mowers in the distance in a nice, not disruptive way, and feel the nice summer breeze... I love my neighborhood swim club a lot. I really do. There is a nice old farmhouse right next to it, the bathrooms are located in it, and a nice old barn, and I can see the woods and they are pretty in the sunset and everything at the swim club is pretty in the sunset and throughout the day. plus the lifegaurds are almost all guys and legit I've never seen an ugly lifegaurd there, only hotties ;)
This is the last summer I have in this neighborhood, we are moving I think after the 2013 2014 school year. Still same town, but I won't be able to join good old Raintree Swim Club :( </3
I'm pissed at my parents. My last summer in my childhood neighborhood and they decide to go to friggin NAC. really an indoor pool? I hate that, it's summer we need to be outside.
so I am trying to figure out a way for me to still get a membership at Raintree. My parents can't just pay a smaller amount of money for me to just go, they would have to pay $500 bc its per house. Do you think I could ask another family to join with them and pay them some money for a membership? bc either way they pay $500, even with me added on.... so can you help me figure out a way to get to my swim club? :( Please, I really need help, because I love that swim club and its my last real summer in my neighborhood :( :( :( </3

Answer
Is it possible that there might be a job you could do there in exchange for pool priviledges?

What is a good reliable weed trimmer?

best quality push mower on Two top Italian mowers for the Spring short list | Mowdirect Blog
best quality push mower image

SLM

I need a weed trimmer and I don't know what kind to buy. I need to weed eat my fence line and I have five acres. I already have a riding lawn mower, push mower and weed hog. I have used electric weed trimmers and they haven't worked so well. Where can I get a good gas weed trimmer?

Answer
Don't use an electric one. If you are above 5.10, you need to get one with a straight shaft and not one that is curved.

Best brands are Stihl, Echo, Huscavarna, and I have had good luck with a toro also. See if you can find one with a Honda Engine on it.

You want to get a high quality trimmer that allows you to replace the line very easily. With 5 acres you are going to have to let the line out 7 or 8 times. Also get a heavy duty one that uses a thicker line so you won't have to keep replacing it. Best Luck!

What is a better self propelled mower - front wheel or back wheel?

Baja_Sessi

I am looking to buy a self propelled lawn mower. Just wondering what people seem to prefer, front wheel propelled or rear wheel? Can you tell me your choice and why? Thanks

Answer
tinman and renpen make some excellent points. Generally, if I'm going to save the exercise on pushing, I'd opt for the more expensive rear wheel drives. They usually have a clutch, which will allow you to make your turns without lifting anything moving. The cheaper ones are usually front wheel driven. I'd spend the money on rear-wheel, usually it's also better quality. Also, I've used these, and they give better control. Look/inspect the better brands/models, they're usually rear-wheel driven.
But to each his/her own. Good luck and happy mowing.

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

best lawn mower prices on Compare Prices of Lawn Mowers, read Lawn Mower Reviews & buy online
best lawn mower prices image

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Both of those prices are for "homeowner quality" mowers. Meant to be used once ,maybe twice a week to mow a small to medium sized yard.
If you do use them for your mowing business, figure on only getting one summer out of them.
Comercial mowers are way more expensive than the prices you have posted, but will last several years .
Just starting out, try to find some good used commercial mowers. Go talk to your local mower shops, look on craigslist, look for mowers at auctions.

Want to buy lawn mower for basic yard, advice on what kind appreciated?

Rev. Dr. G

Have time on my hands, and see no reason to pay the overly high price people charge for yard work.

I have a straight lawn, no golf green type look, main grasss in front and only a little in the back. Don't want expense of riding lawn mower. Want to get one easy to work. For some strange reason when young my father did not want my brother and I to mow the yard, he didn't either?????????????????

So am starting from scratch, but this is not rocket science. A friend warned me about not getting one that you have change each wheel for lever. Basics on buying and doing appreciated, such as dumping grass, maintaining, basically what need to do.

In addition, where to buy and about how much to pay is also a question.

Any thoughts much appreicated.

Answer
Go to Sears. The people that work there are very helpful and can tell you what type of mower you should get according to how big of a yard you have and if you just want a mower or a mulcher/mower combo.

I am thirteen and my brothers are a little younger. I am planning on starting a lawn
mowing/ weed eating business in our
neighborhood with them. Each lot is about 1-
1 1/2 acres. I am wondering how much I
should charge. I have my own lawn mower and weed eater.

Answer
you should knock on their doors and ask them how much they pay to get their lawn mowed and taken care of by some company. whatever they say, you should tell them that you will charge them $25 less if they hire you to do the job.

What is the best gas powered push lawn mower for me?

MiketheMus

I mow 3 to 5 lawns a week. They are .75 to 1 acre. I do not want a self propelled mower as I
like the exercise I get. My terrain is uneven and boggy in places. The information I read online is
often contradictory so I thought I would look for an expert. Thanks!

Answer
Because you mow over rough terrain the first thing that will fail on most mowers is the wheels. I have owned Honda and Toro mowers and because my 2.5 acre lawn is so rough I was replacing wheels every year. I still have those mowers but I seldom use them now. The strongest wheels I have found on any push mower are on the old 2 stroke Lawn Boy Commercial duty mowers. They have grease fittings on the wheels and no plastic. Because it is 2 stroke you can mow the side of hills without oil starvation. The only maintenance it needs is cleaning the exhaust ports a couple times a year, sharpening the blade and greasing the wheels. Another nice feature is a one gallon fuel tank so you don't run empty in the middle of a lawn. They stopped making these mowers in the late 1990s so you will have to find one on eBay or craigs list. I found mine at a yard sale 3 years ago and haven't had to replace a wheel yet. My old Honda and Toro mowers still run good and start with one or two pulls. They are good mowers but they are made for homeowner use. The best new mower you can buy is Exmark but unless you are using it every day it isn't worth the price. If I was buying a new push mower it would be a Honda HRC216PDA.

Can I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 for my Cub Cadet Mower?

I have a Cub Cadet ZTR Mower with a Z-Force Engine, It calls for Kohler SAE 10w30 oil. I want to use a synthetic and I'm not sure if the Mobil 1 would be able to replace it.

Answer
Kohler SAE 10W-30 OIL OR Kohler 30 oils are the recommended oils

if you were wanting to use a synthetic oil you cant do so until you have clocked up 50 hours on the recommended oil before doing so..

my opinion is stick with the Standard recommended oil.

MOBIL 1 synthetic was designed for water cooled high Performance car engines.not the same as the engine powering your cub cadet..

If you want to use a synthetic oil after the 50 hours min use then i would suggest that the briggs and stratton synthetic oil would be a better choice as it is recommended for all briggs and stratton motors so suitable air cooled and lawn tractors and all temps also..

But before that contact Kohler to make sure they don't have a recommendation themselves as gives them an out if motor fails.

Just bought a house and need to get a mower. 1/2 acre, short to medium grass (Fescue), somewhat sloping with minor obstacles. I know i definitely want self propelled but can't decide between front or rear driven? Looking at the following brands: Craftsman, Lawn Boy, Snapper, and Toro. I have found several models under $300 and would like to stay in this price range. Any suggestions on the brands listed? Any I might be leaving out? Very interested in easy starting. Funny thing is they all advertise this!

Answer
You may want to read the current issue of Consumer Reports Magazine.(May 2012) They have an article on lawn mowers and show what features are worth buying as well as rating a number of mowers and showing there features and prices. Of the ones you mentioned I would go with a Toro. It has more features and better repair record and performance than the others.

What is the best riding mower?

Adam

My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
That cub is a hard mower to beat. I think I would look and see how much to repair it first.

How can I hook a tachometer onto a riding lawn mower?

Mike

I recently built a racing lawn mower and I removed the governor so I can get some more speed out of it but I need to install a tachometer so I dont blow the engine. Can anyone help me out? How would the tachometer hook up to the engine?
i know the idle RPM at about 1/3 throttle so i can probably figure out what size tachometer i need.
heh Charley thats funny but the blades have been removed ;) sorry

Answer
The tach is normally tied to the ignition coil, I believe on the NEGATIVE side, but you'll need to confirm this. It may depend on the tach itself. But usually it is the coil ground side it attaches to.

How fast could you make a lawn mower go and have it the blade still cut grass ?

Gavin

Like if you were to trick out like a racing lawn mower but not to that extent

Answer
If you make sure that you increase the blade speed along with the drive speed and use stronger, higher quality mowing blades it's possible to trick it out and actually have it mow decently.

You just don't want to increase the drive speed and have the deck speed stock or what you mow will like sh*t. Take my advice about the blades though, I have a friend that hopped up his mower but lost a stock blade and nearly killed a friend when the blade broke!

Have fun but be safe. Peace!

How do I choose a lawn mower?

no1gal

I have a slightly big backyard and the grass hasn't been cut since winter began, anywho, what type of lawn mower should I get? push/electric/gas? bag or no bag?... how hard is it to use a push lawm mower?
Thanks!

Answer
Get a gas powered rotary mower. You will have to decide if you want self propelled or not. Mulching mowers tend to clog frequently unless you mow frequently. If the grass is going to get any length between mowings you will not be happy with a mulching mower. Bags need to be emptied several times on a lawn of any size. Some mowers can go from rear bagging to mulching to side discharge just by changing some attachments. The new engines from Briggs and Stratton are as dependable as anything else, even Honda. One important thing to consider is how comfortable is the handle. Also check how easy it is to adjust the height. One final point, Don't buy a mower from Walmart or Home Depot. Go to a dealer with a parts and service department.

What are the hidden costs to the environment when these products were made?

Tv, cars, lawn mowers, plastic bags, disposable beverage containers, hair dryers, aerosol spray cans, and pesticides. I need two hidden costs for each. Please tell me some.

Answer
Think about all the costs of getting rid of and transporting all this stuff when it's thrown out. Look at the impact on the environment collecting the raw materials, manufacturing and bringing all these things to market.

Self-propelled lawn 22" mowers - Kohler OHV 149cc vs B/S 190cc engines?

best lawn mower engine 2012 on Best Riding Lawn Mowers for Sale | Best Riding Lawn Mowers Reviews
best lawn mower engine 2012 image

Tom

Both are on the same FWD TORO self propelled mower body (model:20371 vs. 20331). I read the 190 has 6.75 hp and the 149cc has 4.2, but both claim 6.75 gross torque. Which is the better engine to go with? thanks much
p.s. I also was told both these engines were made in China .....

Answer
The B&S engine one is a 2011 model or older, the Kohler is a 2012. The B&S engine is the old "L Head" style Quantum engine that Briggs has used for years. Due to EPA emission regulations, those engines are being phased out in favor of "OHV" or "Over Head Valve" engines. The Kohler engine has only been out for a short time. I have yet to see one in action or service it. This is the first year we have had one in our shop. Another reason that the general public will not hear, is B&S owns Snapper and Simplicity. Toro sees them as competitors now. Either engine will last. Even if they are made in China, Kohler and Briggs will stand behind their engine. I would haggle on the Briggs since its a year older. Another way to tell what year it is, look at the first 3 digits of the serial number. If it starts with a 310, its a 2010, 311 is 2011 and 312 is 2012.

How to clear out overgrown areas?

best lawn mower half acre on Electric Lawn Mowers Finding the right electric lawn mower
best lawn mower half acre image

ashleyb1

My mother's backyard is VERY overgrown in some areas. There's also a pretty messed up koi pond in the backyard that I'm gonna have to trash. Anyway, all I have is a mower, a weed wacker, and my own hands to clean up the overgrown areas. Any tips? She's also giving me a budget to redo the backyard. Which is about half an acre. We live in New England so our weather's a bit unpredictable. Would it be worth it to put a new koi pond in? Also, could anybody help me with some ideas for the backyard redo? Thanks in advance!! :)

Answer
When I built my new house, I had to clear a lot of land. I had to rent a backhoe tractor to level some dirt piles. I then smoothed out some rough areas so I would be able to mow it when it was used as a lawn. Before I could mow the wooded, weedy areas, I had to clear it with a rake, sometimes a bit of shoveling, and a heavy-duty rototiller came in handy. There were rocks of all sizes strewn about. I hauled load after load of rocks in a wheelbarrow, out back where I had a giant rock pile hidden behind some trees. All this took intense labor over a year or so. Looks pretty good now. When you are all done with your clean up, you can decide if you wanna go to all the work of installing a fish pond. Remember, it requires more work to maintain a fish pond. In the meantime, you can get a copy of New Englander Robert Frost's book of poetry. He wrote a lot about such challenging projects.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/themombeat/2012/10/adoption_washington_abuse_repo.html

Or were all American adoptions in the Baby Scoop Era (1950s-1970s) completely voluntary?

Answer
In addition to what has already been said, forced adoption still occurs in the US. Women are not told of their rights, or outright lied to. States like Ohio have a recent history of focusing on unmarried women without family support - they rarely can get the funds together to get a lawyer to fight CPS's unlawful snatching of their infant and placing the child. Most lawyers require a retainer of $4-5,000 before they will do a thing. Other states have no grace period for a woman to change her mind - you have a greater chance of changing your mind about keeping a lawn mower than about keeping your infant human being.

How can i get noticed for work and work without needing to pay for it?

okay mums quite broke and i want a few things, im 14 and i cant spend money to make money. i can do things like walk dogs, scoop up poo and mow.
would the employer allow me to use their mower and fuel?
i would like the money rather fast, as im really bored and have nothing to do, i want to buy a PS3, so i need around $250, and trading in my 360. I would also like a flat screen and computer desk later on, so im hoping to have this by the end of the year. how can i get advertised, i wont be able to drive or anything so it will have to be relatively local, should i just do door knocking to the people with long lawns, or everyone and hand them my number?

I need $7 for skyrim,
$250 for a PS3
$100 for my games back (on ps3)
$400 for a desk (aprox)

[may not happen] $700 for a flat screen (aprox)

can it be possible by the end of 2012, in or excluding the TV?
Im in QLD Australia, and may be able to get a part time job on weekends, but i would prefer doing this as i can work my own hrs ect.

Answer
"okay mums quite broke"

That just might be a clue that u need to be thinking of someone besides yourself. Karma is real dude.

But when I was 14 I started working for a motorcycle shop. And it was all cleanup and deliver this or that at first. Then it worked into minor repair jobs and even occasionally showing a bike to a customer.

I worked there until I came to university.

I don't know what the labour laws are like in Australia, but here guys can usually get cleanup type jobs fairly easy even if they are as young as 12. And, of course, yard work, dogs, babysitting and such are always options. If u like kids (which I don't much) u might do babysitting. I know guys who do it.

I am going to cover my lawn mower up, and store it outside. I am not sure which option is better for it. Thanks for your help with this!

Answer
I always just run the mower till the gas is gone. I used stabilizer once and guess what, next spring the mower and weed whacker wouldn't start. (been cutting grass for 35 years now) never leave gas in there over the winter as the gas can gum up the carb.if you run it you know there will be NO gas left in the carb where as if you drain it there may still be gas in the cab as the carb comes after the drain line.

What brand and model of 2008 or 2009 riding lawn mower is the most dependable for mowing a large yard?

A Friend

Can you recommend a brand and model of a riding lawn mower that is safe, dependable and has a smooth ride. We have a large yard (2 acres) and my husband has had a back injury.

We have a tractor but need a riding lawn mower to cut grass around the house. Which tractor will hold up with heavy use and be comfortable to operate.

Answer
According to the first link below, the John Deere X304 is the best lawn tractor overall.

Second link is price...seems pretty typical though this particular model isn't at Lowe's. Didn't look at Home Depot.

We got an old, second hand Craftsman from a customer. That rider was used on MANY big lawns while hubby had his lawn maintenance business. It was used for 5-6 years before it quit. I wish it was still working!

Speaking only for myself, I'd look into a Craftsman. I'm not fond of Sears, but I loved riding it and miss her sorely as we now have 3 acres!

It's either 2011 or 2012 model it has deck washout hose fitting it's around 20 inch deck size.. Starts on the first half of the first pull every time, Uses a 6.5 hp motor runs very quietly especially for that much power. It's also much lighter in weight than any other mowers I've used in that size category.. This would be easier if I had the model # and precise year, I'm looking for a ballpark range of the retail price paid for it brand new by the original owner..

Answer
Price will depend a lot on location. Go to your local lawnmower stores and ask them as they know what applies in your region.

how much money is a lawn mower worth in scrap metal?

Carter Bal

how much could the whole mower be worth? i am willing to take it apart and strip the wire (which i already have) how much per pound and is there a catalyic converter in the muffler?

Answer
If you mean a push mower.. I agree with about $1.00

If it's a riding mower, perhaps $20

Steel has very little value. You might want to seek aluminum and copper and lead. You get those from wiring, gutters, plumbing, car batteries, etc.

best lawn mower petrol or electric image

winterrule

I know there are some light duty battery and plug in electric mowers but nothing suitable for large lawns. I would like to see a battery powered 48" walk behind mower deck or a zero turn mower. It seems like a good way to promote electric vehicles. Equipment like this could give people enough confidence in batteries to consider electric cars.
So there are some choices for light duty mowers. None of those mentioned work very fast or have much battery life. The best is rated for one acre and needs 12 hours of charging time. That's fine for an urban lawn on a 3/4acre lot but not fo ra more rural estate. Most homeowners want to mow their whole lawn in one session, not spread over 2-3 days.

Answer
I have had the chance to use an electric mower with a cord on a lawn that takes about 2 hours to mow. Tall or short grass the performance seemed similar to a similar petrol powered model. The cutting pattern had to take the cord into consideration. However it was quieter, needed virtually no maintenance, would always "start" never seemed to get old and did I say it was quieter?

In that situation the corded model was preferred to a battery version because it was cheaper, requiring less investment, it would require less maintenance, the particular situation did not require batteries. The lawn was set up with reachable outdoor plugs and the investment in a proper cord would pay dividends as it could be used for other electric yard equipment. Someday roadways may be set up to provide power to electric cars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road-powered_electric_vehicle

Other situations would require battery models. Europeans have had to live with their environment longer than most Americans. They have a different approach and appreciation. It is not surprising that battery mowers would be popular in Europe before becoming popular in the US. However from the links below you can see that such mowers are available in the US.

I have a Champion petrol mower which wont start, is there a check list of things I can do before I pay someone?

I am not brilliant with motors and things so please explain in laymans terms if you are able.
Thanks

Answer
It is basically a matter of spark or fuel.
Spark is checked by removing the plug, grounding it to the block and watching the gap at the end while the starter cord is pulled. to ground the plug wrap the stripped end of an insulated wire around the area where the wrench or socket touches, the other stripped end is held in contact with the engine, It is easier if someone else pulls the cord. if a n electric spark jumps the gap, you have spark, or fire, or juice, depending on the mechanic you talk to. If you have no spark, you have either a break in the wires conducting the electricity, or the coil near the magnets in the flywheel is shot. Oh, one more thing, since you have removed the sparkplug, look at the gap end and see if either side of the gap looks carbed up or burnt, You might try replacing the plug with a new one.(don't drop it! the gap is set at the factory and it is easy to mess it up by say, hitting a hard surface, so be careful from the time you remove the plug from the carton and you install it.check that spark again before you install it, it will rule out the plug as the culprit either way, but if you still have no spark, your problem is likely to be a shop fix problem. But you can sound helpful and knowlegable by saying "it isn't getting any spark." when the mower guy asks you what you need.
Now, lets say you have spark! happy day, your problems are smaller!
The carbouretor is a source of consternation to most folks, including mechanics. so dont feel bad, it is also an exterior feature and easier to get to for adjustment or swapping out. Get a can of lighter fluid, remove the air filter cover and squirt a small amount into the top of the carb, that hole or round opening the cover covered, lets call this the air intake, anywho, pull the cord right after you squirt the small amount of lighter fluid into the intake, If you have spark you should get some sort of near starting cough at least. It may even start and all you have to do is put the air filter back on and mow. I am assuming the fuel tank has gas in it,and it's the right kind of gas,a four cycle engine just takes gas to run on, a two cycle needs a gas/oil mix. How can you tell them apart? A four cycle has an oil dipstick which you should check for the right oil level.
OK , back on track, if you still don't get a spark, one last fix before you go see your mower guy is to tighten the carb onto the fuel tank.
Mowers vibrate when running and this can loosen the screws that hold the carb onto the fuel tang. Get down near the carb(with filter removed and look straight down. past the carb, there should be screws accessible by the right screwdriver(flat, or philips, or, god help you, torx, or allen, They really want to make it hard for you oftentime.)
digressions aside, try to tighten these screws, if only by a small amount, you are trying to seal any air leak past the gasket between the fuel tank and the carb. Too much might twist the head of the screw off and complicate your mower maintenance to no end. So, try to start and if no luck, to the pro you go. Good luck.
I am a strong advocate of lawnscapes that don't require mowing. being green does not pertain to you lawn. Friends don't let friends do turf!
You can get someone else to kneel on the mower deck with their knee against the end of the sparkplug while you pull the cord. It will light them up and answer your question about spark quickly, but it is a dirty trick and could cost you the trust of your helper!

I need help with my lawn mower
it is used up and that means it ran out of gas.

how much money will I have to pay to refill it at the gas station?

Answer
first of all, don't take the mower to the gas station. Buy a 1 gallon gas can, fill it at the station then you will have gas at home for the next time.

I don't want to spend the money to buy a lawn mower. What else can I use?

I remember seeing a gardener using a tool once to cut the grass in our backyard because he didn't want to deal with hauling the lawn mower back there. Maybe it was a weed wacker? What equipment do you recommend I use instead of dealing with a big lawn mower to cut grass?

Answer
How about one of those old fashioned push mowers. They use no gas, just your energy. They are lightweight, and work fine for a small yard. I got mine for about $85 at Home Depot last year. I use it for very small grassy areas in the yard. Good luck!
