Q. Do you know if any stores like Home depot or like lowes have layaway(any that you can get to)? And I am talking about a RIDE ON LAWN MOWER! NOT PUSH. My mom is looking for a store with layaway that sell RIDE ON MOWERSfor fathers day. We already have a push one but out lawn is too big for a push lawn mower and it takes too long.

Toro - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Cub Cadet - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Troy - 18.5 horse power Koedler engine
John Deer - 19 horse power Straggs engine
Lawn Boy - 19 horse power Honda engine

All lawn mowers are 42 inch cut zero turn radius and come from a major retailer like Lowe's and Home Depot. Is it better to purchase a lawn mower directly from the company dealer (ex. buy a John Deer from a John Deer dealer) and which one of these lawn mowers will be the most durable?

Answer
From my personal experience, I find the Briggs & Stratton and Honda the most reliable, with the Koedler doing well in third. Durability wise, nothing beats a John Deere.

Home Cheapo or Lower's are probably you best bet, unless you can get it direct cheaper from the manufacturer or dealer. It would take some comparison shopping. Usually around Father's day (upcoming) they offer some great deals on these in any of these places - check your newspaper circular for the best deal.

Also don't rule out "refurbed" if you are looking for a bargain - that is how I got my last mower for about 1/2 of what it retailed for normally...

How can I flush diesel fuel out of a gasoline lawn mower engine?

best lawn mower to buy on How to Buy the Best Gas Powered Lawn Mower
best lawn mower to buy image

bkcrum

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can do it! You didn't say if it's a push or a rider, either way it's simple! If you have a push mower first remove the air filter, tip the mower over (with a bucket under to catch the diesel) getting as much out as possable. Some engine oil will run out that's why you removed the air filter to keep oil out of the element. Refill the tank with fresh gasoline. You may have to use a starting fluid (sparingly) to counteract the diesel in the carb, but it will start. run the tank dry and you should be over the crisis of diesel fuel. Oh don't forget to replace the clean air filter!

what kind of gas do you use in a new kohler engine lawn mower?

Susan

It is a new Lawn Boy mower bought at Home Depot.
I heard on the radio that the unleaded gas with ethanol is bad for mowers.

Answer
Hi Susan

If you can buy 100 percent gasoline, that is what you should use. It runs better and is not as bad about gumming up your carburetor as ethanol gas is. There is a station near me that has non ethanol gasoline so there are a few around. If you are going to store your mower over the winter it is best to add an additive to prolong the fuel's life. A couple of these are STP fuel treatment, Sta-bil.

Hope this helps

My husband and I are looking into buying a lawn mower/tractor to mow about 3 - 4 acres. We are thinking about either a JD 2210 or JD 4115. Does anyone have a suggestion of any others, especially of lesser cost, but the same quality for the amount of mowing to be done? Also, suggestions on which size of deck and the amount of time it would take to mow this amount would be great. We have a Torro with a 54" deck now, but we are sharing it with my father-in-law and it is becoming a hassle to take back and worth every week or so. Plus, we have to get the bushhog to use too. We use the Torro for yard (about 1.5 acres) and the bushhog for the other acres. That's why we need one that would be great to do it all! ~thanks

Answer
I'd Look at exmark or grasshopper's..., any 42 inch with a hydro riding mower will do 1.5 acres easy though... I'd also think about simplicity/snapper mowers as well. Simplicity owns snapper.

How do I get my lawn to look thick and green like the professional landscapes?

best lawn mower height image
Q. I just bought my first house and the grass is brown and being overrun by weeds. It looks horrible. I want to start over and plant some Kentucky Blugrass (I live in Minnesota). How should I do this? Do I just seed over top of the current grass, or should I rip it out or what? And also, how do I maintain it every year and what shoud I do and not do (lawn mower height, fertilizer, weed prevention, etc.). I know its complicated, but give me your best tips, write a short novel if you have to! I just want my lawn to look good.

Answer
You can put Kentucky bluegrass seed over the top of current grass. Apply some good topsoil on top to keep birds from eating seeds and wind blowing it away. Seeds should germinate in about 2 weeks be sure to water almost daily. Generally Bluegrass needs more water than drought tolerant grass.
You should fertilize once in spring, summer and fall. And use a winterizer in well....winter. A good analysis of about 16-8-8 will work well....

Brown spots are either grubs or fungus.......Dig around grass grubs are large white worms with brown head about the size of a large thumb. If no grubs found probably fungus.

Ahh lawn mowers. Keep setting low in early spring then go up one notch in mid summer and high setting in fall. If grass is cut short during mid summer and fall it tends to look brownish.

A weed n feed fertilizer will work great for fertilizing and weed control. Also you might try a pre-emergence weed control in Early spring this will keep weeds from germinating.

Be sure sprinkler system is working properly and aerate/dethatch lawn in Early spring.

How do you adjust the blade height on a yard machine lawn mower?

Answer
One does not adjust the blade on a mower. You adjust the height of the wheels. There should be levers that you push in to unlock the brackets and that will allow you to move the deck up and down as desired.

What wrong with my Sears DYS 4500 Lawn Tractor?

Keith L

I have a 2008 Sears DYS 4500 Lawn Tractor. It's been running and riding great until this weekend. I know that I'm not suppose to be going up hills, but now it won't go up hills. It's like it doesn't have enough power. I used to be able to go up hills with out any effort and now I can't. The engine sounds good. I haven't gained any weight. I suspect the automatic transmission. Any ideas on what might be wrong.

Answer
change the transmission fluid and the filter.

Are husqvarna lawn tractors good on hilly terrain?

Jeremy

I was thinking of buying one of there lawn tractors but i have kind of hilly terrain. I know some lawn tractors don't do as well on this type of land.

Answer
It is going to be less an issue of what brand and more what style of mower is going to work best for you. Steep hills call for a mower with a lower center of gravity and a wider stance. How steep are you talking? Also are you running up and down the hills or across? A floating deck is going to be better then a hanging deck to reduce scalping as you crest the hills. Additionally, the bigger the hills, the higher the risk of rollover, so investing in a mower with a seatbelt and ROPS (roll-over protection system) may be very well worth it.

Finally, you need to look at what type of transmission is on the equipment. A low price mower may be under-built to handle the demands you are putting it under. A commercial grade mower may cost more, but may save you a bundle in repairs and replacement in the future.

What is that loud popping sounds in lawn mower engine coming from?

Magnix2k

When cutting the grass with Honda lawn mower, it got weaker and weaker with loud popping sounds. I had to wait until its shuts down and start it again. It happens every15 secs. Is it easy to find whats wrong and fix it myself?

Thanks!

Answer
Its backfiring. That sounds to me like a high speed jet has gotten clogged in the fuel delivery system. If this thing sat at all during the winter and you didn't do a complete season start tune up then there you go....

Today's gasoline is the worst I've ever seen; you can't let it set around. -it gums up everything.

I need help with striping my lawn and making it look professional?

best lawn mower for zoysia on Lawn Diseases - Top Turf Lawn Care
best lawn mower for zoysia image

Aztec

We have about 1 acre of land and we use a cub-cadet lawn mower. I have tried to stripe it but I cant get it to look like the pros. Is my technique wrong? Is there something i could make to pull behind the tractor to bend the grass down? That is what they do at the golf course. I mow it at about 4.5 inches. Any tips?

Answer
Stripes in grass work best on fine textured turf such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bent or Fescue. If you are growing a turf that requires a mowing height of 4.5 inches such as St Augustine or Bahia, then striping is tougher.

Be sure the blades are very sharp. Mow often and make marks somewhere unobtrusive so that you are mowing in the same direction in the same place every time you mow. Mow often. It is the repetition of direction that eventually puts stripes in turf..

Reel mowers often have rollers behind them to prepare the surface for playing. The rollers should not be too heavy to prevent soil compaction.

Remember, the striping in turf is much more visible from above and on TV, you may have more striping than you can see from ground level.

how do the shades on the baseball fields come to appear on the grass?

benedict k

i'd like the grass on my yard to look like a baseball field..by using just my push lawn mower how can i make shaded lanes on my yard?

Answer
I just ran across this webpage the other day which will answer your question. Part of the answer is here, but check the source for the web address for the full article and other links.

"The designs are created through a process called lawn striping. To create lawn-striping designs of your own, you only need two pieces of equipment: a lawnmower and a roller. Many professional groundskeepers use old-fashioned reel mowers to cut a stadium's grass. Attached just behind the blades of the mower is a lawn roller that bends the grass down. Some lawnmower manufacturers are beginning to make riding mowers with full-width rollers mounted to the rear of the mower to make this task easier.

Whatever pattern you make is revealed by the light shining off of the bent grass. A checkerboard design is created by passing over the grass in side-by-side rows, first going north to south, then making east-to-west stripes in the grass that intersect the north-south stripes. In this way, you alternate the way the grass bends. When you look at your lawn, the stripes of grass leaning away from you will look lighter. This lighter green is caused by the sunlight reflecting off the entire blade of grass. In the darker green stripes, formed by the blades of grass leaning toward you, the sunlight is reflecting only off the tips of the blades.

Different grasses can be used to accentuate the striping effect, including rye grass, fescue and bluegrass. You won't see such a big contrast between the stripes' colors if you have a warm-season grass, such as Bermuda or zoysia. Watering the grass after mowing can make your pattern stand out even more. "

How do you make grass grow better in a poor horse pasture?

q.h.luvr

My two geldings are living in a 5-acre pasture all to themselves, and they have eaten most of the grass and there isn't much left for them. I can make it to the barn about every other day, but not quite every day, and I need to make sure they are being fed enough. They are both in good health now, but I don't want them to get too skinny.

Answer
first off I would cross fence the pasture to rotate pasture area for your horses while one side is growing the other side can be used to feed for next year since there is going to be a frost soon with in the next month about the middle of october not much grass is going to grow this year for the rest of this year. I would get a round bale feeder and round bales. if you have a riding lawn mower and can find 5 feet of old chain link fence and a wood pallet drag the chain link fence with the pallet on it over the pasture to break down all the horse patties to fertilize the pasture and give a better area for the grass to grow

What is the technological country situation of the USA?

best lawn mower consumer search on Price & Shop: Buy a lawn mower & tractor

Vincent

If information available: more specfic: the snowsports industry in the USA

Answer
The USA has an infinity of technologies.

Until the US business world started to export its work to other nations, and solve the terrorist border situation by blocking access of foreign students to US universities, the US was a world leader in many technologies, but if current trends continue, the US will cease to exist in a few decades.

There is a wealth of information about snow sports technology
http://www.google.com/search?q=snow+sports&hl=en

Have you ever seen a winter olympics?
All those sports are alive and well in USA.

There is ice hockey, ice scating, ice dance.

In big cities there are ice rinks where even in the hot summer weather, people can play on the ice. The place rents ice skates to the patrons.

The US has many places where people go for skiing on snow, which is often artificial. There are lifts to carry people to the stop of the ski slopes. These places are called ski resorts.

An alternative to standing up while riding down a slope, is sitting or lying on a snow board.

While skis and snowboards might sound like low technology, there's a huge industry associated with the resins used to make the skis and boards slide well, not have snow stick to them.

There are also people who go cross country skiiing.
Snow Shoes are used to walk over snow.

America loves its consumer electrnoics, so those people in the high mountains, on skis, they often able to talk by cell phone to friends still in the big cities.

In the big cities of the north, there can be lots of snow in winter, and residents have ways to avoid having to shovel 50 feet of snow each day. There is something called a snow blower, that in size is like a lawn mower. It goes over the snow, and moves it away from drive way and street, so cars can travel there without a lot of hassle.

The air ports use these kinds of things on a larger scale.

In Alaska, when you park your car at parking meter, you can plug it into electricity to keep the engine warm, so it does not freeze so it will start again when you are ready to leave.

There are cities with electric cables running under the sidewalks, to keep the sidewalks at a temperature such that any snow will melt.

There are vehicles that drive over the snow ... various sizes, from like a motorcycle on skiis on up to trucks that drive over an "ice road" in Alaska and Canada, over a lake that is frozen most of the year, in support of various mines that need to be supplied year round.

What is the widest cutting width you can purchase in a walk behind, self propelled, mulching mower and which manufacturer makes it?

Answer
This is a bit more of a professional level mower but it's a 34".

Otherwise if you have an acre or more to mow I'd seriously consider getting a zero turn mower.

What should I look for in a lawn mower?

Sarah

I am needing to buy my first lawn mower, can anyone please tell me what I need to look for? I'd like a decent quality, but I don't need anything super-fancy, I would like it to be self-propelled of course, but other than that...

Answer
Self propelled, as you mentioned, is a big thing with me. Also, the horsepower of the engine. I wouldn't buy anything less than a 4.5 hp, and prefer at least a 6.5. I have had best luck with mowers having Briggs & Stratton engines. Also, the larger the swath of the mower, the less trips around the yard you have to make. Buy at least a 22-24 in. mower. If you have a yard on a slope, or an uneven yard, mowers with larger rear wheels may be better suited to your needs.

Good luck!

How do I fix the suction in my irrigation pump?

lowclearen

I have a pump just for my irrigation system. It had a pipe sticking above the ground, which got hit by a lawnmower. I had the tp of the pipe fixed, whats next? Do I prime the pump? If so how, it looks like a closed circuit for the sprinklers. Please help!

Answer
I suspect you may have air in the line after the pipe breakage by the lawn mower. The pump likely will need re-primed to remove this air so the pump can work properly again. I'm getting the impression the pump may be inaccessible. If this is the case you may reopen the repaired end of the pipe you fixed and pour as much water as you can into it and replace again and turn the pump on this may get it re-primed enough to start pumping properly again. If you can get at the pump , look for a rounded casing which would hold the impeller or blades which spin to pump the water. When you find this look on top for a removable plug to prime the pump, fill with water and replace. A garden hose would be ideal for this if one is available but a bucket of water will do. It may take a try or 2 but should work for you. Also many newer pumps are self-priming pumps so it may take a few minutes of running time for it to begin working normally again if it didn't start right away after the pipe repair.

What is the best way to clean pool?

Ted

I just bought a house with a pool and learning how to maintain it myself. What is the best device to clean the pool. Suction or robotic?

Answer
Just the old fashion way.... Hooking up a hand brush cleaner on a 18 foot pole that is hooked up by a hose to the skimmer. You do it by hand running the brush cleaner on the pool bottom in rows almost like a walk behind lawn mower (so you don't miss any spots) you do it in consistent rows. Works good (but a little tedious) and you got to do it every few days. Also you need a screen hand skimmer on a 12-15 foot pole that lets you remove bugs and leaves from the water surface.
And make sure your pump is adequate. Meaning if its too old it may not do the job right. Also, if you have a tiny hole in the fixed skimmer piping you won't have adequate suction in the skimmer. Check and make sure there are no leaks in the pipes that lead to the pump. If there are leaks but you can't see the pipes because they are buried you have to dig them up to replace them (If its an in-ground pool). The pump needs to be back washed regularly to remove all the goo that accumulates in the filter. Usually once a week does the trick. Add chlorine daily at approximately the same time of day and check your pH regularly too. The water will get cloudy when your pH is out.
Also, when you first start to maintain the pool there is normal cloudiness that eventually goes away after a few days to a few weeks. This is caused by the initial spike of chlorine and the death of millions of microbes (that you can't see) that have grown in there. Eventually the filter will siphon them out but you got to do back washes almost daily to eliminate them from the pump.
Its a lot of work and its why some people (who have a lot of money) just hire a pool geek to maintain it all season long. Make sure you have pH kit to test the water and also a Chlorine kit to test the levels of chlorine that you are running.

best lawn mower under 1500 image
Q. I'm 16 years and cut a few yards here and there, along with some powerwashing.
The only things I do are clean up yard, rake leaves, yard, blow etc.
As for powerwashing, just powerwash sidewalkes or driveways.
I'm really great at what I do and people love my services. I live In Carrollton,Tx by the way.
My questions are....
Do I need any type of license or permits to run these services? If so, can you tell me which ones please! Please keep in mind that I'm Limeted to certain things because of my age.
Also, I feel my small business is growing and I want to do everything legally. What tax forms do I need? And can someone give me a rough estimate of how much liability insurance will cost? Nothing has happened, but I'd rather be prepared. So please, if you would basically be able to give me all legal information including everything from tax forms,to how to manage them, to the actual insurance. Please include house cleaning services too. This is only a son and mother thing and will certainly not expand beyond that. 2 mowers, basic equipmenf, powerwash, and thats it. I know this question will take a lot of time...but I will greatly appreciate the best answer! Extra advice will be great! Thank you so much :)

Answer
1. In TX, you probably do NOT need any type of license or permit. Not in Houston, anyway, where I live.
2. You will have to have a parent help you with tax forms - as a minor, you cannot file your own.
3. If you have no employees, if it's ONLY you, then your liability is covered under your parent's homeowners/renters insurance, most likely. Call their agent and ask. Otherwise, a "stand alone" liability policy for a landscape/mower, no tree trimming, is probably going to run you around $1500 a year - UP FRONT.

House cleaning is DIFFERENT than landscaping - and if your mother is cleaning houses, it will probably double the price.

Answer
Here's a short list of jobs which you can create to generate income:

1. Learn calligraphy so that you can provide handwritten invitations and thank you notes to prospective wedding parties, birthday celebrations, etc. Seek out clients through wedding planners at nearby churches and temples. A starter calligraphy kit usually runs around $20 and anyone can easily pick up this skill. The going rate is usually $1 per hand addressed item.

2. Become a "poser" who assists wedding photographers in setting and arranging various individuals in group and single photographic positions. "Posers" carry around a sketch book of various sitting and standing poses which consists of onion skin overlays of various wedding pictures bound in albums. Again, contact local wedding photographers and wedding planners, accordingly. The hourly pay is around $10-$12 per hour and you are often invited to attend all dining activities.

3. Seek from your neighbors a gardner position which involves planting, weed removal, plant/tree trimming, light brush clearance. You will be using the neighbor's equipment and tools. Again, do not represent yourself as a lawn mower since there are any number of safety issues involved. A door-to-door solicitation of surrounding neighbors is required and you can charge between $6 to $9 per hour.

4. Offer policing/removal or clearance of trash services to surrounding neighbors which involve trash pickup within nearby residential area. Limit the extent of pickup to small areas and be aware that there are no hazardous terrain or elements involved in this process. Again, a door-to-door solicitation of neighbors is in order. You can charge between $6.75 to $7.50 per hour.

5. Acquire a set of window cleaning tools [a bucket, liquid window cleaner, sponge, squeegee, handle with an extension and a small step ladder] and solicit local businesses for your window cleaning services. However, be careful to limit the height of the window cleaning to no higher than one story. Charge $1 per window panel.

6. Become a proxy/stand-in for neighbors to allow delivery of goods and packages to your home/apartment. Acquire the authority to sign any receipt of incoming packages as an accepting neighbor. Charge $1 per each package handled by you.

7. Consider becoming a restaurant-cafe customer liaison by using your cell phone at restaurants-cafes to coordinate with the hostess to keep track of waiting customers. Whenever there's a very long period of time to activate a waiting list, you want to offer the restaurant your services so that customers do not have to stand around for any lengthy period of time. And when their name/assigned number comes up; you can call the upcoming customer's cell phone to tell them that they can return to the restaurant and be served. The call back fee is usually around $0.50 cents on a per head basis. For example, a couple would be charged $1.00 while children under 6 would not be charged. Placement of a plaque which outlines your fee schedule near the hostess station is sufficient to garner attention of prospective customers who will value your services since they can do other activities outside of the restaurant -- often beyond the range of any inhouse paging system. You realize that everyone has a cellphone and why not take advantage of the connectivity to make the diner's experience worthwhile. The restaurant will also appreciate the added service you are providing as a customer liaison.

8. Why not become a paid feeder servicing the disabled at nearby nursing, convalescent, assisted living/care centers and hospitals. It involves feeding food to patients who are unable to feed themselves. The starting rate is $8.00 per hour. The only downside is that one has to take precautions to wash one's hands after each feeding. A posting of your services [by a business card or flyer] on a reviewable bulletin board would be enough to generate customers. The paid feeder position is one of the fastest growing occupation at this time.

Good luck!

I live in an condo complex with some very inconsiderate neighbors who play their music as loudly as they please. I have a white noise machine, but it doesn't really help with the bass. The bass is what's driving me crazy. Talking to these people doesn't work because one is literally out of her mind, and the other just seems to not really care. I have foam earplugs (STC 30) from Home Depot, but they don't really do much to filter out the bass other. I was curious if anyone has tried the Bose QC3 headphones in an attempt to filter out noises like that. Does it work well?

Answer
The Bose QC3 and Bose QC2s do an awesome job filtering acoustic noise such as a jet engine, a lawn mower, ect. If suppose you had some music through the QCs it might help you. The best thing you could do is try them. Bose offers a 30 Money back policy for you to try them out. How ever in this case id suggest the Bose QC2s.

Not worth the conversion, just get a new motor or mower. And yes they do make diesel lawn tractors

How much can you sell a riding lawn mower with a bad engine for?

Olunde

We have a Troy Built riding lawn mower that needs some engine work. We don't feel like messing around with the repairs, so we were just going to sell the body.

What would be a reasonable price to ask for?

Answer
I like the other answer about subtracting 10% for each year and then the cost of the repairs - but I would argue that you may still have trouble selling it at that price.

When I put myself in the buyer's position, I can't help but think that there should also be an additional incentive for me to purchase a non-working item. Yes, theoritically, I would be made whole by deducting the cost to repair - but that is just an estimate. If I'm going to take the additional risk of buying a non-working item then there should be a little extra cushion in it. If for nothing else than to protect me in the event that the repairs go over budget.

How about
- Take 10% off for each year
- Take off the cost to repair
- Take off an additional 5 to 10% since it isn't currently working.

Graciela,

My aunt offered me a good deal on her old riding lawn mower and I really want to buy it. Unfortunately, I have no place for it. My garage is too small, and our cars barely fit already. I have no shed and can't afford to build one. Are there any other options?

Answer
Sheds really aren't that expensive. you can pick up a cheap DIY plastic shed for very little money.

if that still isn't an option, go with a tarp. just park the thing next to your house and lay the tarp over it. if it's windy, make sure to stake it down.

What lawn mower should i buy and how much should i charge per lawn?

~*Michael*

Im 14 years old and am looking to start a lawn mowing buisness this spring. Although, i have no idea what kind of lawn mower to get (push, ride on, etc.) as well as what brand to get. Also how much should i charge per lawn? Last thing, whatelse besides lawn mowing should i offer to clients?
thankyouu, all answers are appreciated.

Answer
A riding lawnmower will do larger yards faster, but you have to consider how to get it to your job site. If you live in a city and the lots are small, go with a push mower because you can get closer to fences and around trees. You might also want to offer trim hedges. You could consider doing evergreen trees shaping them, if you can find some to practice on.

What type of lawn mower do you recommend?

best lawn push mower on LAWN MOWER 22 DECK Lawn Mowers

I am preparing to purchase my first lawn mower. I am looking for a push mower (also known as a walk-behind). The grass in my yard grows very quickly, so I would like something that will last a while and not wear out quickly.
I have heard good things about the snapper company and was thinking I might get one of their mowers.
Do you know anything about snapper or do you have other recommendations?

Answer
Best brands from personal experience -

1. Snapper
2. Toro
3. John Deere
4. Honda

No matter which you buy make sure the dealer has a good parts & service department. Don't buy from a big box store or you'll regret it when/if you ever need service. Even if they carry the brand you want, they're not the same models offered by "real" power equipment dealers.

How many amps is needed for a good electric lawn mower?

We've got a very small yard of bermuda grass. We're currently shopping for electric lawn mowers, but don't know what an acceptable amount of amps would be? We saw one in our price range with 6.5 amps, but for $40 more, we can get a 9 amp mower. Is there a big difference between the two? Would I need more amps? And is it worth the $40 price difference? Thanks so much!

Answer
With your very small yard you will not need the higher amp model. You need to keep the grass at a reasonable height each time you mow. In other words do not let it get too long before you mow. That is what will cause a strain on the smaller motor. The difference between the two motors you are looking at is very small. The 6.5 amp is approximately 1/2 horsepower and the 9 amp is approximately 3/4 horsepower. So that is very little difference. I think you should save the 40 bucks for something else. What type of lawn mower do you recommend?

Q. I have a small back yard (20' x 30') and love the way the grass looks once it has been cut with a gas lawn mower. However, I want to get rid of the gas mower and considering a reel or electric mower. Would the reel mower give it the same look as the gas mower does? I have Zoysia grass. Opinions?? Thanks!

Answer
I highly recommend a McLane 17" front throw reel mower. With the grass catcher. http://buyapushmower.com/2009/12/21/mclane-17-inch-7-blade-front-throw-17-ph-7/
I've been using mine for over 7 years and is without a doubt the best reel mower out there. Easy to push and maintain. I Never use a rotary mower on zoysia grass. I own a maintenance company and only mow properties with Bermuda, zoysia, or paspalum grasses. It's perfect for areas I can't get a heavy mower into. My zoysia grass is maintained at 350 mm.
You will be able to get a closer, or lower elevated cut on your zoysia, which in my opinion looks better. You will be able to scalp your grass at the lowest setting to dethatch your lawn when needed also.
The first few cuts will be a learning experience and there will be bald spots on any areas where the soil is not level under the grass. Rolling it will solve that problem.

Garden tractor prices?

Im looking to buy a garden tractor, i dont care what kind but i want something that i can attach a plow to the back to plow our garden. I was wondering how much a gardeb tractor goes for, what is the best kind and where i could look for one, thanks!

Answer
A plow needs some pretty good tractive effort. You will need some heft, a locking diff and/or 4wd. Some of the small utility reactors can do this, New Holland (Ford), Kubota, etc.

For a rototiller, you can go down to a lawn and garden tractor. Look at the mid range Cub Cadets (2500 series and Up) and similar. Ideal is a hydraulic tiller, most lawn and garden are driven by belt. Very few use a mechanical or hydraulic PTO like a big ag tractor would.

Lawn and garden for lots of tilling, plan on at least $3000. Small utility tractor, plan on $8000. Some people like the grey market tractors...I'm not a big fan but they are cheap.

There are some cute little plows made for small tractors, even walk behind tractors...pretty much worthless for anything more than digging a seed furrow.

What can I do with this driveway?

Kat

A house we are looking to purchase from a friend has 1/4 mile gravel/dirt drive that curves and goes up a very steep hill that has been cut and cleared through a forest. (needs 4wd in anything more than 1" of snow or slush, and even then it can be tricky). Every time it rains, the rain creates trenches in the driveway path through the center or a ravines towards the bottom. The current owner uses a tractor every time it rains to flatten out the driveway and make it usable. The large, fist sized (sometimes larger) jagged rocks also cause flats quite often.

I was looking into concreting options, but they quote upwards of $30,000 to do a 8' wide, 1/4 mile stretch of concrete. I liked the idea of concrete, so that we could plow in the winter. However down here the snow typically stays on the ground less than 2 weeks, so it's not a huge deal.

What are our options really for this driveway to make it more usable and "do-able"?

Answer
Whatever you do it's gonna be hard, and a lot of work.

To keep the surface from shifting or forming huge ruts you'd have to dig up what's there down to 1 or 2 feet. Then you need to lay down a bed of coarse crushed stone under a bed of finer crushed stone. After that you can lay whatever surface you're looking for. Concrete is expensive, but not as expensive as asphalt (with all the oil product in it)... Tar and Chip is how they resurface roads around here, but that requires a hard road surface too.

Just do the crushed stone part first. Stone doesn't like to shift around too much when it's laid right, and it allows water to drain. It'll be the cheapest solution.

Here's what I'd do. See if you can hire someone with the right machines (a front end loader or whatever) to dig out whatever you have down. Then I'd rent or borrow a dump truck, some rakes, and a hand roller (like this http://therentalzone.net/roll.jpg) they even make rollers that can be pulled behind a lawn mower / truck. Get a few friends to help, buy one load of the coarse stone and haul it with the dump truck, spread it out to a 6"-10" layer and roll it 3-4 times. When you know how much one load can cover do some math to figure out how much more you'll need. After the coarse stone is down do the same with the fine crushed stone.

When you plow it try not to scrape the stone too much. If properly done it should last you several years. When there's a problem just buy some more crushed stone and level off the road.
