KEVIN

My LT180 John Deere riding lawn mower has a Kawasaki engine in it and currently has a Kawasaki oil filter 49065-7010. I can't find this at any store (ie. Home Depot, Lowes, Sears). Is there a retailer I can find it at? Has this filter been replaced with a different model? Can I use a different filter? Thanks!

Answer
The WIX brand filter number is 51394.
I service lots of equipment and trucks. wix is the "preferred aftermarket " brand for me. they have a great web site, you Just put in the filter number you have an it will give you the wix number. Wix is sold at almost all parts stores, auto supply houses, ect. They usually stock more wix than any other brand. Wix will also have the air and fuel filters ect. super easy if you have almost any brand or OEM filter number. I use wixfilters dot com a lot.

How do I ready my riding lawn mower for winter storage?

happydawg

I bought a Sears Craftsman riding mower this past summer. I have been working a lot in the last 2 weeks, so I havent really had time to do whatever I am supposed to do to make it run next spring after sitting in the cold garage all winter. What should I do to my lawn mower to store it for the winter months and make it start again in the spring?

Answer
Remove battery store in warm place above freezing charge it once every 8 weeks, put in a gas treatment for storage like sta-bil don't drain gas that may dry gaskets and corrode carborator parts and/or rust tank make sure to run 15 min to get treated fuel into carborator bowl. scrape dryed grass from under mower deck and spray with oil WD-40

Im looking to buy a garden tractor, i dont care what kind but i want something that i can attach a plow to the back to plow our garden. I was wondering how much a gardeb tractor goes for, what is the best kind and where i could look for one, thanks!

Answer
A plow needs some pretty good tractive effort. You will need some heft, a locking diff and/or 4wd. Some of the small utility reactors can do this, New Holland (Ford), Kubota, etc.

For a rototiller, you can go down to a lawn and garden tractor. Look at the mid range Cub Cadets (2500 series and Up) and similar. Ideal is a hydraulic tiller, most lawn and garden are driven by belt. Very few use a mechanical or hydraulic PTO like a big ag tractor would.

Lawn and garden for lots of tilling, plan on at least $3000. Small utility tractor, plan on $8000. Some people like the grey market tractors...I'm not a big fan but they are cheap.

There are some cute little plows made for small tractors, even walk behind tractors...pretty much worthless for anything more than digging a seed furrow.

Can't be answered here. Depends on where you are and what the local market is for used mowers.

Make believe you're trying to buy one locally and see what others are charging for similar items. Also check with a local lawnmower repair service for an opinion.

Do you think people who drive Harley Davidson cruiser bikes are rich ?

KPKonliner

To be honest, for me,the Harley is too expensive,I mean I think It's great value for money but It's still expensive. What do you think ? What kind of people who buy this kind of bike ?

Answer
I see the Harley Mafia is in full swing. They give thumbs down to anyone not kneeling at the altar of the "Harley Davidson" God.

I find about 10 - 15% of HD riders are real bikers, have been riding for years, rain or shine, and they respect anyone on two wheels. When you wave at these guys, they wave back, regardless of what you're on.

The rest are "Biker Wannabes," as articulated by another poster, ride for 2 or 3 hours on weekends, stick their nose in the air at Japanese bikes, because they fall for the "Harley is superior" hype. These are guys that rode a dirt bike when they were a kid, maybe had a Yamaha XS650 for 3 months before getting the sh!t scared out of them. Now, their kids have moved out, maybe the wife did too, and they want to recall their glory days.

Don't get me wrong, HD certainly has their place in the world of motorcycles. A HUGE place. I love the way they sound, I like how they look, but I also love the variety of bikes out there, from any country, and any size shape, engine configuration. American, Japanese, Italian, German, British, I love 'em all. But if you think a HD is a fire-breathing monster that other bikers are afraid to take on in a race, forget it. Loud does not equal fast or powerful. I had a KLR650 that my Harley buddies made fun of for looking like a dirt bike and sounding like a lawnmower. Until I blew their doors in in a drag race. I paid $4000 for the KLR with 600 miles on it. The HD bikes cost an average of $12,000 and had a variety of performance enhancements, and most of them had more than twice the displacement.

Cue the Harley Mafia to click the "thumbs down" icon.

Bottom line is HD is not a bike for racing. They are very heavily over-engineered cruisers, and that's a good thing, but it makes them expensive. You get what you pay for. They will last for decades with a minimum of normal maintenance, and can be rebuilt easily. They are simple - they use 85-year-old pushrod/rocker arm technology, a proven, reliable method for operating valves. But pushrods and two-valves-per-cylinder are not conducive to high performance.

If I had unlimited money, I'd have a garage full of Harleys and everything else. I consider myself to be a guy that rides motorcycles, not a guy that rides Harleys. There's a difference.

We close on our first house March 30th and we are total newbies to homeownership. One of our first purchases should be a lawn mower. The house sits on just over a third acre. What should we look for in a lawn mower? Not even sure where to start. What makes a good lawn mower? Is a rider worth it?

Answer
Depends on your preference. If you want to walk, a push mower would be fine. If you want it to be a little quicker and easier, a rider would do. You should also know what type of grass you have. St. Augustine grows faster and needs cutting weekly during season, while bermuda would grow a little slower, and zoysia even slower. You may need to mow weekly, or every 2 or 3 weeks depending on the grass. The less often you have to mow it the more a push mower makes sense. And with some grass types, such as zoysia or rye, you do want to use a catcher to bag the clippings.

how do the shades on the baseball fields come to appear on the grass?

benedict k

i'd like the grass on my yard to look like a baseball field..by using just my push lawn mower how can i make shaded lanes on my yard?

Answer
I just ran across this webpage the other day which will answer your question. Part of the answer is here, but check the source for the web address for the full article and other links.

"The designs are created through a process called lawn striping. To create lawn-striping designs of your own, you only need two pieces of equipment: a lawnmower and a roller. Many professional groundskeepers use old-fashioned reel mowers to cut a stadium's grass. Attached just behind the blades of the mower is a lawn roller that bends the grass down. Some lawnmower manufacturers are beginning to make riding mowers with full-width rollers mounted to the rear of the mower to make this task easier.

Whatever pattern you make is revealed by the light shining off of the bent grass. A checkerboard design is created by passing over the grass in side-by-side rows, first going north to south, then making east-to-west stripes in the grass that intersect the north-south stripes. In this way, you alternate the way the grass bends. When you look at your lawn, the stripes of grass leaning away from you will look lighter. This lighter green is caused by the sunlight reflecting off the entire blade of grass. In the darker green stripes, formed by the blades of grass leaning toward you, the sunlight is reflecting only off the tips of the blades.

Different grasses can be used to accentuate the striping effect, including rye grass, fescue and bluegrass. You won't see such a big contrast between the stripes' colors if you have a warm-season grass, such as Bermuda or zoysia. Watering the grass after mowing can make your pattern stand out even more. I need to take my new tractor lawn mower to have service at the end of summer. I do not have a trailer for it, and I was planning to use the back of my truck to carry the lawnmower to the dealership. Will the tailgate be strong enough to support the weight of the lawnmower without damaging it? If not, are there ramps for sell that will distribute the weight on the bed of the truck instead of the tailgate? Thanks!

Answer
You shouldn't have any problems. One thing to watch out for are those speed bumps or dips in road. That will cause a pretty strong force on the tailgate if you hit them to fast.

One other thing....check to see which end is the heaviest...put that part up in the bed and the lightest on the tailgate.

I bought a Lawn Boy 20" push mower from Home Depot last year to replace my old one finally died. This mower is terrible. My main problem is that, unless the grass barely needs to be cut, the clipping exhaust port clogs up and the thing starts dropping most all clippings with an almost empty bag. The bag has never made it more than about half full. Is there anything I can do to improve this (new blade?) or is it just a crappy mower?

Answer
Make sure the blade was installed right side up for one if the mower is new. I would bet that this is the problem.

What is the difference between commercial lawn equipment and regular ones?

dee jr

I wanted to start a landscaping company and a friend of mine suggested that i get a commercial lawn mower instead of one at home depot as they are better for heavy duty work, i wanted to know what is the difference in terms of work load they can do.

Answer
Aside from some having larger engines and wider swaths which help you work faster, the industrial grade stuff will generally have a longer Mean Time Between Failure, meaning they will run more days at 8 hours a day before breaking down. They have better construction, like using ball bearings in places instead of bushings.

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.

Answer
They are priced as high as people are willing to pay, and unfortunately there are many people willing to pay way too much money for mowers. It's just simple economics. Too many financially irresponsible people encourage manufacturers and retailers to gouge us on prices.

Something I would recommend is buying slightly used equipment. People frequently buy more of a mower than they need or can afford and end up selling it only a year or two old. I buy almost all of my tools and equipment used. For example, I just bought a nearly brand new Cub Cadet with only 19 hours on it for $1,000 ($2,400 new price tag!).

Watch Craigslist and roadside for good, used equipment and don't support price gouging by buying overpriced new equipment.

I hope that helps. Peace!

The old fart called the cops on me for loud music.

Its funny cause the only reason I dis it was to drown out the noise he makes every day.

He rides around on his lawn mower 7am-6pm every day. And he doesnt even have a lawn!!!!!!! Only dirt.

I only started playing loud music because after 3 years of him riding his lawn mower I got sick of it.

Funny hiw this old azzho thinks only he is entitled to peace and quiet, no one else.

So do you agree its funny?

Answer
Yes, that amazing, "only dirt" LOL! I have a neighbour like that, he used to have a home-made trike, he used to just sit there and rev the engine all day for no reason. So one day, my step fathers friend accidentally ran over and killed a badger. We took the badger and put it on the trike, positioned so he was sitting up and holding the handle bars, lol. My step dad got arrested the next day, because they had cctv cameras on their roof and seen him the next day when they looked back at the footage, lol. He said it was worth it, you should do it to your guys lawn mower. LOL. Hope i helped :)

how much torque or horespower does an alternator use?

best lawn mower under 200 image

James A Th

how much torque or horespower does an alternator use? ballpark figures. and yes under heavy load. I would like to know on big alternators like 100, 150, 200, and higer. I need to pull atleast 400 amps continuosly maybe more. How many alternators would I need and batteries? How much horsepower would I need to keep all the alternators spinning and be able to drive normal?

Answer
About 1hp for every 12 amps. A 600cc motorcycle engine with 45hp could easily deliver the 400 amps you're looking for. GE makes a 185 amp marine alternator that is very fluid. I'd recommend three of those.

A lot of it has to do with the way you have the cams and belts laid out. A 5hp lawn mower engine could potentially turn a normal 100 amp at approximately 65-70% at probably a rate of about 1 gallon of gasoline per hour, but that 600cc engine with 45 hp could probably only use 1.25-1.5 gallons per hour.

Therefore, if you're using electrolysis (1929 water car) or straight electrical power to build a hybrid for fuel economy, you might actually get better gas mileage with a higher horse power gas engine because it will idle lower. If the 400 amps will move your vehicle 70mph, at 1.5 gallons per hour, that's about 45-50mpg, better than with the 5hp lawn mower engine for sure.

What is the best riding lawn mower for under 2000 dollars. I have 3/4 of an acre to cut, no trees or hills?

Answer
I bought a Cub Cadet last year and I love it. It was sitting next to a John Deer with the exact same engine and the same size deck but was $1,500 less. I mow 4 acres here and it cuts it great. I paid $1,919 for it, but for the size yard you have Iâd say a smaller one for about $1,200 would last you for many years.

Who has decorative wood chips as a lawn?

Our lawn mower broke, we can't afford to get another one right now. Our grass never really took so it's not a beautiful lawn anyway... So I was thinking of taking all the grass out and laying decorative wood chips down. Do they stay or would they blow away in the wind?

Answer
I put down cedar mulch. . .supposed to be better and not float away when it rains. I put down plastic that absorbed water and then tons of cedar chips. Now years later the cedar mulch has broken down into compost and everything is growing on top of the plastic. I'm switching to lava rocks and stone walkways and a good deal more cement. If you have a large yard, it will take a fortune to put down chips thick enough to stop the grass from growing through. It is the plastic that really helps with that. Look for a used lawnmower or if your yard is small, use your weedeater. I'm slowly adding beds and getting rid of grass. I want a huge garden. . flower garden. . .I also have a huge veggie garden. I'm slowly making islands of plants surrounded by mulched walks that will become stone (cement) walking paths. I have less grass every year and bigger gardens. And love it.
Almost forgot the down side. . .bugs, termites and lots of $.

What should I know before building a garden shed in my backyard?

Korey

For my senior project, i a building a garden shed i my backyard. I was wondering what i may need to know or what questions i should be asking myself regarding this project. Where should i start??? Any advice will be appreciated!

Answer
Your first step should be to check with your city or town office. There may be restrictions on the size of a shed or you may have to have a building permit. You don't want to get the shed built and then find out it does not meet the specifications that are required by your city.

Once you know that, that ask yourself the following:

What will I be storing in my shed? This will determine the size you want to build. Is it just for a few garden tools? Or is it for a lawn mower, snow blower, wheelbarrow, chainsaw and bicycles?

Will you be using the ground as the floor or using an elevated floor made with sturdy planks? I would suggest an elevated floor so that moisture stays away from the floor of the shed. You might want to consider placing your shed on skids - that way - it can be easily moved around the yard.

And consider using some eavestroughs on the shed and feed them into some rain barrels.

How big a door do you need? You don't want one that is too small and find out you can't get your lawn mower in there. Also, ensure that you can lock the door to help prevent theft.

Do you want windows for ventilation or just some vents? And if you put windows - consider putting bars in place so that vandals can't break in.

My neighbours have bought PVC fences by driving to Minot at almost half the price what they would have paid in Canada ? why is that ?

Answer
Sometimes its based on volume (the big US stores have more purchasing power than the equivalent Canadian chains in many cases). Soem things are only available in the US because they may not meet Canadian standards, and the Canadian product is more because of the increased standard required (a lot of small engine products like lawn mowers, generators, etc fit in this category.) Manufacturing costs in the US tend to be lower than Canada for many products. The really interesting thing though, is that a lot of wood products come from Canada, and are available for less in the US than in the country of origin. Go figure...

how should i care for my lawn when spring arrives?

Pierre T

hi all,

i moved into a newly built house last year with the sod laid down on june of last year. as a new home owner i was unaware of the maintenance required by achieving a lush green lawn. i did not fertilize the lawn last year which i think i should have in the fall??? living in canada, the snow is all melted and now there tons of dead grass built up. i removed the dead grass carefully with a rake. some spots are green but i'd say 80% of my small lawn is brown. not sure what the grass breed is but i don't think its anything fancy like blue grass, probably good enough for the builder to be able to save money.

can anyone give me recommendations as to how i can achieve a nice green lawn?
do i water first to moisten soil?
do i water, aerate and fertilize or vice versa?
what kind of fertilizer numbers or brand would be recommended for my situation?

much thanks all!!! =D

Answer
I would be a little careful about aerating, certainly using a machine to do it, because your sod may not have settled, your grass may not have rooted, and aeration may just dig up too much ground (also, beware of companies that do this -- some create disasters).

If I were you, I would scrap off any dead grass and other debris -- which you have done -- and sprinkle the lawn with sheep manure, top soil, compost, or a combination of any two or the three. If necessary, use your mixture to fill any holes, dents or seam lines in the lawn. Water if you like, or just wait for a good rain. After a good watering, or a good rain -- but being sure a heavy rain is not forecast -- sow your grass seed. You can do this by hand -- there is no need for fancy equipment. After this, if you do not get rain in a couple days, water lightly, and do that regularly.

There is really not a great need for fertilizer -- if you sow grass seed regularly and water regularly, your lawn will be fine. Also, in place of fertilizer, sprinkle your lawn with a good manure or a compost twice a year. In a year consider using a roller after a good rain or watering, to level the ground.

Of course, if your builder's landscaper did a really bad job, you may need to consider a serious re-seeding, or laying of new sod, and/or a serious fertilizing.

Your lawn does sound in worse condition that long established ones like mine. I have a nice green lawn right now, and have had to mow and clip several times already. Still, give it time, your grass is new, and not fully established. Again, if you do not get a decent amount of rain, be sure to water, as well as doing all of the above, and you should be fine.

Take a good look at your lawn regularly, and it will tell you what it needs. To be sure that the sod has well and truly taken, make sure that there are no seams, and certainly no browning at the seams. If there are bald patches, you need to scrape and do a spot aeration with a rake, and then sprinkle with some soil/compost and seed the area, and keep it watered for several days. If the lawn is doing badly over-all you may need to take a serious corrective step.

Oh, one more thing: if the lawn is healthy enough, mow it regularly, so that the grass clippings can be mulched back into the lawn (as opposed to having to be collected). Grass is like any other plant -- reducing growth above ground encourages growth below ground, and that is what you want. If the lawn cannot tolerate having a power mower running over it, then get a push mower.

Good luck.

how do i sharpen the blades on my lawn tractor?

EpicRacer

i followed the instructions on about.com and my tractor still isn't cutting good enough. i have to mow over the yard twice because the blade doesn't cut evenly.

whats the proper way to sharpen mower blades? i used a file the first time (a couple weeks ago). can i sharpen them with a bench grinder? do they need to be really sharp? when i bought new blades last year, they weren't really sharp, but they cut great.

can someone recommend a good set of blades? i have a 42" deck. i mow about 4 acres (4 seperate yards).
theres only one way to put the blades on my deck, so i know they are installed correctly. i would rather do the work myself since im on a tight budget.

Answer
Your first order of business should be checking to see if you might've mounted the blades on upside down. This is really easy to do, and makes cutting the lawn impossible. However, if you still can't find the problem, read the following paragraph.

I have a similar sized lawn and a similar sized mower. What we use is a bench grinder. Using the grinder allows me to get an extremely sharp, quality edge on my blades. Just be careful that you're not overzealous with the grinder, though.

Troy-Bilt $379.00
7.75 Torque 21" Self-Propelled Gas Mower
Item #: 303531 Model: TB340 XP

This is a very good mower where the self-propelled speed is determined by how fast you walk. Its a commercial mower at a home owner's price.

Rear bag verse side bag: Well first off its hard to find a side bagger these days, they're just not popular and here's why. Rear baggers were designed so that if you have several obstacles in your yard, (trees ETC...) you can maneuver around them from either side without changing directions, the down side is side bags are a little larger (not much). That's about it.

Don't use an electric one. If you are above 5.10, you need to get one with a straight shaft and not one that is curved.

Best brands are Stihl, Echo, Huscavarna, and I have had good luck with a toro also. See if you can find one with a Honda Engine on it.

You want to get a high quality trimmer that allows you to replace the line very easily. With 5 acres you are going to have to let the line out 7 or 8 times. Also get a heavy duty one that uses a thicker line so you won't have to keep replacing it. Best Luck!

I bought a lawn mower on july 16th of 2013. I accidently washed my reciept in my pants so its unreadable to actually see if I was charged? There was an issue with customer ahead of me to where she was asked to step aside for a minute so I could be rung up? Is there a possibility I was actually never charged and women infront of me was charged? Is there a possibility home depot is just taking a long time? store seems unknowledgable when called? thank you.
I'm not sure that my credit card ever really went through? My credit card company states they never even got an authorization as in doesnt seem it was ever run through machine? I think item is free as of right now?

Answer
Transactions usually take only 1-3 days to post to your account. Chances are you did get your lawnmower for free!

What are some of the best reel push mowers available?

I have a couple of lawns lined up to cut. I want a push mower for the exercise and the fact that I won't have to pay for gasoline. I've just heard that some of them don't cut very well no matter how much muscle you put into it. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
I'm in the market for one too. We bought one second-hand to check things out and get a real feel for this type of mower. Here's what we learned. Most reel push mowers are good to maintain short grass, which is no good if you want to control weeds. I want my lawn to be 3+ inch high. When the product specs say you'll need to sharpen once a season, it means 2-4 times a season. The blades on our Great States mower were sharpened before our first mow and after mowing three times, the ends of the blades of grass looked riped (and our lawn is small - 1200 sq ft). If you're obsessive about having your lawn cut evenly (like me), you'll get your cardio workout in by mowing your lawn (and it still might not end up even- argh!). My approach to mowing the lawn is I don't mind mowing 3 times a week, if I only have to do it for 10 minutes each time; but the results have to be clean and even.
The main thing to remember is if your lawn is level everywhere (ie no pot-holes anywhere) and free of hidden rocks and twigs, you can consider a manual reel mower. But if it's not, then you'll either have to fix it or restrict yourself to the more expensive manual reel mowers. However, don't confuse price with quality: we thought that a Brill was the top of the line. Not so. First figure out what kind of lawn you have and the kind you'd like to have and maintain, and what you're willing to put up with, then choose the best mower for you.
After some research, I've decided that the Fiskars Momentum is the one for me. Problem is, it's not cheap. Lowes has them at the cheapest price around: $200. Or maybe I'll go for the Scott reel mower for $130. Which boils the question down to: will I be irritated at myself the next four years for saving $70 on the initial price of the mower? How much do I value 4 years of peace of mind, little to no sharpening of the blades and an easier mowing job for an evenly cut lawn? Kind of a biased question, I know.
You might decide to do like we did and check craigslist for a second hand mower to figure out what you like and what your lawn is like to mow. Then, when you're ready to get "the one", go for it and sell old one again on craigslist for a slightly lower price than what you paid for. Turned out to be a pretty cheap "rental" for us.

how much money is a lawn mower worth in scrap metal?

Carter Bal

how much could the whole mower be worth? i am willing to take it apart and strip the wire (which i already have) how much per pound and is there a catalyic converter in the muffler?

Answer
If you mean a push mower.. I agree with about $1.00

If it's a riding mower, perhaps $20

Steel has very little value. You might want to seek aluminum and copper and lead. You get those from wiring, gutters, plumbing, car batteries, etc.
