victa lawn mower?????????????????

BOB

hi
im getting a victa classic 30.
do you need to mix the engine oil with the patrol or is there to separate tanks?

Answer
is it a 2 cycle or 4 cycle? the lawnmowers made today are mainly a 4 cycle. 4 cycles do not require mixing oil and gas and run cleaners as a result

What would be a good way of selling 1st and 2nd Victa lawn mowers ever made?

Regan W

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of the Victa 18ers plus twin cylinders.

i am looking to sell where would be a good place to sell these items..
we dont want ebay

Answer
I had to go and google "Victa" first, but now I see its a very vintage mower - cool looking!

Have you tried local antique / collectible shops? A lot in my area will carry your item for a commission, so you can set the price.

Perhaps there is a fancy local garden shop, or someone with an outdoor art garden in your area.

I hope you find somewhere! Good Luck!

lawn mower?

Sam Zypins

my mower runs when I spray starting fluid in but when i shut it off it won't start unless i spray starter fluid in it again. Why won't it start after running for 5-10 minutes on gas alone, whenever i shut it off, i have to pull the plug and spray starter fluid....why?

Answer
it may need a tune up if you've just pulled it out of storage recently. a good tune up would include putting some new gas in it (and Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer to get rid of any moisture buildup in existing gas), change the spark plug, the motor oil, replace the air filter, and clean under the mower deck.

most of these jobs on a simple push mower are pretty simple to accomplish and will cost you maybe $20 at the most, sounds like a spark plug issue to me so that may be your culprit. hope this helps. best wishes.

What can I do if gas gets unto the motor of my lawn mower?

Sergio P

Its not broken or anything, its that I sort of dropped some gas into the motor on accident. Should I wait till it dries or should I clean it?

Answer
I usually just start the mower and keep cutting. But this is probably not the correct answer. Problem is, if you clean it up with a rag, then you have a gasoline soaked rag that is also a fire hazard. What do you do with the rag? It is not recommended to hose off the mower for a couple of reasons, one, you could seriously damage a hot engine with cold water, and two you could contaminate the fuel or oil or air filter with water. I suppose the correct thing to do would be to allow the mower to cool (you should never refuel a hot lawn mower) and clean up the spilled fuel with rags or paper towels and put the gas soaked towels in a fire proof waste can. All with a fire extinguisher within arms reach. Not many people have a fire proof trash can at home though and by the time the engine is cool, the fuel will probably have evaporated anyway. So, we are still left with the original question, I guess the best solution is not to spill fuel in the first place. Like I said I usually just start the mower and keep cutting. ( I am by no means recommending this approach though).

How do you get gas out of a lawn mower?

Jack Putte

We had a suggestion to replace last year's gas and try again. My husband turned the lawn mower upside down to try to get all the old gas out of it, but there's still some left in there. I'm guessing that the small amount left in there probably has a lot of sediment, and should probably come out, too. But neither of us knows anything about lawn mowers, so any suggestions would be great.

Here's the original question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AosqVE1IYRRKKBiX2LV523Hsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090509123907AAy0KlW

Answer
turning it upside down was the worst thing you guys could have done. now you might have flooded the piston chamber with OIL from the mower. remove the spark plug and make sure the chamber where the piston is (it's under the spark plug hole) isn't filled with oil. if it is you'll never get the motor running again until you get all the oil out of there because it will foul up the spark plug and the plug won't be able to produce it's spark to ignite the gasoline.
it's always best that at the end of the season to just let the motor run until the gas is gone, and even then you should try to start the engine to get what little is left in the chamber to ignite. just because the gas was left in there doesn't mean that the mower won't start when you go try to use it. you would have done better just to try to start and see what happens. now if it doesn't start that presents a whole new problem in that the gas that was left in there CAN sometimes turn to gunk and mess up the carburetor if that's the case the carb will have to be removed and all the jets cleaned out and then start over again. change the gas line filter.the only sediment that would have been in there is whatever was left in there (dirt etc) from last year IF ANY. the gas itself (as far as i know) doesn't leave a sediment in the tank just because you didn't empty it. it turns to gunk only in the carb.
can''t think of anything other than you might change the spark plug for a new one, and clean the small air filter that will be somewhere near the carb. it's usually just a small piece of foam that's used to keep the dirt out of the carburator.
i only used the gas stabelizer once and the following year was the only year my mowers wouldn't start. go figure. just run the mower out of gas.
good luck to ya's

What is the difference between propelled, electric and gas Lawn mower?

lilfinevin

I am looking to purchase a lawn mower with a collector and have no clue what the differenc is in each of the 3 types that seem to be out there.

Answer
Self-Propelled means that there's a mechanism that helps the mower go forward when you push on the handle. It reduces the work you have to do in pushing that SOB all over your lawn...which is nice, but doesn't make it completely without effort, either.

Electric mowers can come in two flavors: Corded, and battery-operated. Legend says that the battery operated ones have come a long way. We had one 10 years ago, and you had to REALLY keep up on your lawn, or the battery-op mower just couldn't hack through the grass, especially in the early summer when it rains a lot and the grass goes insane. Corded ones have plenty of zip and power, you just have to make sure you don't run over the extension cord. We never had a collection bag on ours, so I don't know about that part of it. You also never have trouble starting one up, and you don't have to tinker with stupid stuff like spark plugs or small engine repair. Or gasoline, for that matter. They also tend to be lighter, weight-wise.

Gas lawn mowers are what most people have...these are small engines that run on gas, so you'll have to keep that around. Most of them have collection bags which will need to be emptied two or three times per mowing, even in a small yard like ours. They still require maintenance; my hubby isn't very handy (ok, he's a handyman's idiot), and I know nothing about small engines, so I have to take my mower to someone competent to have the blade sharpened and engine tuned and the whole thing lubed and such.

Ask your neighbors if they know anyone who does lawn mower maintenance and then ask the mower guy if he has mower recommendations. We took ours in and he said, "A Snapper? I never see those things in here!" We took that as a good sign. Hubby was dumb enough to mow wet grass and then not clean out the underside, so it solidified into a concrete mass and the blade wouldn't turn. Don't do that.

Consumer Reports seems to like the following mowers:

Gas-powered push models:
Lawn-Boy 10640
Cub Cadet 11A-18MC

Corded electric push models:
Black & Decker MM875

Cordless electric push models:
Black & Decker CMM1200

Self-Propelled Models:
Toro Recycler 20333
Toro Recycler 20332
Toro Recycler 20330
Craftsman 37435
Lawn-Boy 10641
Craftsman 37624

Good luck!!

Racing Lawnmower?

Q. Im 14 but know a great deal about mowers so dont think im just some stupid kid... im building a racing lawnmower out of a murray mower frame ... im scrapping the tecumsea on board and i have a 12 hp b&s i/c with the govenor removed... i used the one piece flo jet carb on it instead of the factory lmt so i could have a bigger barral with and have a cold air intake system i reversed the stacker pully and will put a 3 inch pully on the tranny. I welded a bracked i cut off of a gocart for throttle lever mounting and strait piped the engine with metal pipe... im working on rewiring it so i wont have any traces of an interlock system. I could use any ideas pics diagrams or any other mods ... thanks

Answer
Im currently tinkering on a 8o's Murray lawntractor, its using ( for the moment) a 14HP briggs OHV motor (stock) , stock 6 speed transaxle ( for the meantime) , golf kart wheels/rims, tapered bering hubs on front wheels. The trick is less drag, then its faster- the stock front wheels w/o berings will slow you waaay down, plus be a weak spot, at least look for some with the internal berings. Currently im using the basic drive belt setup/stock clutch setup with extra tensioner pulleys for no slippage, a 6" cast pulley on the motor, a 4" pulley on the transaxle, it gets me near 30MPH in this setup. Obviously the deck is gone , was all rotten when i bot it. I dont suggest leaving the deck on , specially not in running form- remove the blades/spindle assys- being a bare shell would be okay tho - most racers cut them up and just bolt the sides of the deck to the floorbord( for the look of a deck and less weight).
Next step is a 18HP flathead twin cylender Briggs i got off a 92 MTD - im hooking a 'snap back throttle 'setup on it, using a high flow air filter element ( bypassing stock air cleaner assy), possibly a slightly larger engine pulley, meybe a 1/2" smaller trans pulley. Right now my limitations are in the trans, for speed options, once it lets go, ill swap a 90 degree right angle drive unit in , run a chain setup to a straight axle rear end and have to use a go kart clutch or torque drive setup ( since no tranny will be there) . This isnt setup to race , this is for personal experementation, I do have to add a few saftey issues here tho:
1. Brakes - use a set of GOOD aftermarket go kart brakes, stock brakes wont work at those speeds ( trust me, things come at you mighty fast with no brakes)
2. Id suggest not bypassing the governer, unless its been highly machined to acept the extra RPMs, theyre only designed for 3,000 max RPMs, theres a chance the flywheel could shatter , not to mention how fast parts would fly from the motor overevving it. You can get alot of speed with a goverener on it ( mines still on it and it runs 30MPH)
3. Wear a helmit and saftey gear! I wear a helmit when i drive my tractor- you only come with one brain and it scrambles easy!
4. Have some welding done : Id suggest strengthing alot of the parts on the tractor, steering, front spindles, chassis. You can buy or make a set of front spindles that are stronger then stockers and they accept a go kart type hub for those wheels. A differnt type of steering should be used as well, the go kart type is stronger and better then stock - you dont want to be flying around and have it break on you.
5. Build the tractor low, the lower the better, when its too far off the ground, its top heavy making it easier to tip over on you, the lower/wider the more stability.
6. I have to add this one as well.... common sense. Dont drive on the streets or roads, if you have alot of property, then use it there. You dont want to be pulled over by the police on a lawntractor ( its not a leagal motor vehicle for the streets) , or worse, get run over by a car. If you really want to race them with others, join a lawntractor racing group in your area ( yes they have them) theres specific guidelines to setup your tractor, but its for saftey purposes - use google for one in your area.
7. Id also suggest one more thing - a saftey kill switch - id suggest the one that hooks to your arm( like new snowmobiles/jet skis) and a seat switch. That way, if y slip and fall off the tractor wont keep running.
8. You mentioned a straight pipe, motors need a certain amount of backpressure to run right, I have a straight pipe on mine for now, i plan on using some threaded black pipe and fittings to run it down n under the floorbord - a way to tell how long to make it? At first, make it a bit long, spray some white paint on the pipe and run the motor for a bit, where the paint turns brown is where to cut it. With the twin cylender and twin pipes - it should look sweet, i plan on looking for some chrome drain pipe( for bathroom sinks/ect) to cover the black pipe.
This tractor is actually my second, the first was a older Craftsman with a 14.5HP OHV Briggs, till the 5 speed trans locked up, then i made the Murray. The next one will be a screemer, out of a old Wheelhorse Raider 10, lowered , near full blown racing setup and using a 16HP tecumseh motor with oil pressure ( oil pressured motors are better for racing setups) , plan on using go kart wheels, spindles, steering, full chain drive, straight rear axle and the right angle gear drive ( its a 1:1 unit, used on bush hogs, field mowers).

I seriously can't figure out what the hell this thing is actually telling me. for all practical purposes what does it mean?

Answer
Basically, what they are trying to tell you here, that if you are in the business of renting out equipment and other personal property (e.g. construction equipment, lawn mowers, steam cleaners, pick axes, or whatever) you have to collect the state use tax, which is equal to the state sales tax, and remit it to the state.

How do you change riding lawn mower tires?

My tires are worn badly so I plan to order new ones. How do I get my new ones on the rim? What's the best technique?
I know this is the wrong section. I couldn't get an answer in other sections. I'm trying to get the actual tire on the rim. The back wheels.

Answer
hammer a couple big screwdrivers pry off front side most of time after you pop the tire bead on both side you pry off with two scewdrivers soapy water helps... and really a tire shop would do it for 10 to 20 bucks... only hard part will be getting the tires bead to pop down after that you should have a problem

My tires are worn badly so I plan to order new ones. How do I get my new ones on the rim? What's the best technique?

Answer
Doozier I take wheels off and use long flat blade screwdriver to remove tires. When installing your new tire, buy small ratchet strap wrench. Put the strap wrench around center of tire and tighten up, you will need to do this to get tire to take air, release strap wrench after tire starts taking air. I put link at bottom, for you to see ratchet strap wrench. You can buy cheap one at Walmart or dollar store.

Can Hispanics ever become real Americans?

Q. I don't think so. With very few exceptions, their culture is too different from ours. I think the only way to keep America as a united nation is to start deporting illegals, to prevent any more from entering, and to encourage the Hispanics residing in the USA legally to return to their homelands.

What is your opinion?

Answer
First off, theyâre not âHispanicsâ. Theyâre Spanish speaking Mexicans Indians of Mayan, Aztec, Nhutal, Oxaca Indian ancestry. The real Spanish people are European white of Celt-Iberian, Suevian and Visigothic Germanic ancestry. They look like these people:

As you can see, they donât look like the Mexicans crossing over here illegally every night. They havenât been to Mexico in over 200 years and 95% of Mexicans have never been to Spain or ever seen a real Spaniard before except maybe tourists. Mexico is 90% Mexican AmerIndians that mostly have zero to distant Spanish ancestry. The Spaniards only made a small minority in their colonies during Spanish colonial times. They were only interested in gold and exotic foods like pepper and tomatoes and got kicked out during the Napoleonic War. They didnât cause any great genetic change compared to British North America or when the Vikings invaded Britain, Ireland, and Russia. These are the type of Mexicans I see that working as roofers, lawn mowers, bag boys in Filipino grocery stores, and cooks in Chinese or Greek restaurants.

The get called âHispanicâ because of Richard Nixon and Casper Wienberger who coined the term âHispanicâ for affirmative action. Emperor Napoleon III of France coined the term Latin America and thus âLatinoâ arose when he was invading Mexico and Vietnam (and coined the term âIndoChinaâ).
(Look up Richard Nixon)

As to how we can deal the illegal immigration problem Iâve said it before, build a massive concrete wall fortress with MK93 heavy machine gun emplacements manned by US Marines armed also with M40A1 sniper rifles. Put electrified fence and mines near the walls with surveillance cameras. Itâs our sovereign right. Itâs worked between North Korea and South Korea (which the South Korean border is manned by over 40,000 US Army troops), It worked between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. It worked for ancient Imperial Chinaâs Great Wall against the northern barbarians for awhile. And it worked Roman Britonâs Hadrian Wall against the Picts barbarian radiers from Caledonia (modern Scotland). Why doesnât the Federal Government get off its butts and start building the wall now instead of kowtowing the pro-illegal, pro-amnesty âHispanicâ lobby groups. We must also prosecute and put in jail company owners and human resource managers that willingly hire illegals.

Self-propelled lawn 22" mowers - Kohler OHV 149cc vs B/S 190cc engines?

Tom

Both are on the same FWD TORO self propelled mower body (model:20371 vs. 20331). I read the 190 has 6.75 hp and the 149cc has 4.2, but both claim 6.75 gross torque. Which is the better engine to go with? thanks much
p.s. I also was told both these engines were made in China .....

Answer
The B&S engine one is a 2011 model or older, the Kohler is a 2012. The B&S engine is the old "L Head" style Quantum engine that Briggs has used for years. Due to EPA emission regulations, those engines are being phased out in favor of "OHV" or "Over Head Valve" engines. The Kohler engine has only been out for a short time. I have yet to see one in action or service it. This is the first year we have had one in our shop. Another reason that the general public will not hear, is B&S owns Snapper and Simplicity. Toro sees them as competitors now. Either engine will last. Even if they are made in China, Kohler and Briggs will stand behind their engine. I would haggle on the Briggs since its a year older. Another way to tell what year it is, look at the first 3 digits of the serial number. If it starts with a 310, its a 2010, 311 is 2011 and 312 is 2012.

Look to the manufacturer for what to do. Do it on-line.
Are you sure it's the right bag and just as important are you sure that mower is made for a bag.
You just cant make a mower into one that holds the grass if it's not already capable of doing that.

can i attach a bag to a mulching lawn mower?

sackman

i have a mower that mulches but I made a mistake i would like to pick up the grass. is there any way that a bag could be attached to my mower?

Answer
If it has an attachment for a bag you can add a bag. You will probably have to visit a dealer that sells your lawn mower to get the right back for your lawn mower.

My old lawn mower did both. To switch it from mulching to a bag mower you need to remove a large plastic plug that block the grass going to the bag. So make sure there is not a plug or something else that is blocking the path to the bag. Some lawn mowers have a mechanism that when you pull up on a leaver to attach the bag it opens the opening.

Is it better to mow your lawn with a mower that has a bag or without?

Kim M

Answer
Do you rake your yard with a regular lawn rake in the spring and fall?
If you do this, by all means, continue to non bag a lawnmower.
I do have to make an exception. You must mow your lawn at a 2 1/2- 3 inch level weekly. Unless you mow your lawn more frequently and at a lower rate, or just do it when I can, use the bag.
A five to seven day period is max for the turf to grow and be trimmed. Set your mower height at near or at maximum to prevent crabgrass and weed germination. The amount of fert should ultimately decide you bagging.
If you fertilize, if you rake in both the early spring and in the fall, do not bag it. If you do not do either bag the stuff. To do both the fert and rake in spring and fall will allow you to topseed and remove thatch. Fert without the rake means you put your money on top of dead grass that will never reach the roots.
Maintain your lawn. A Bagger is a lazy excuse for poor maintenance. In over twenty years I have yet to use either a bag or collection device for my sixty acres of turf. My services and methods are in demand. Cut it, feed it, rake it twice a year.

Any way to make a lawn mower quieter?

Brian.E

I have a gas powered push lawn mower, and it is a bit noisy. It is a 4 horsepower Briggs & Stratton. Is there any way I could lower the noise that is produces when running? Thanks in advance!

Answer
You should be able to find an after market muffler at a small engine repair shop. I got one adapted from a Honda to fit my 5HP Briggs, big difference. The blade can also be noisy, especially the mulching blades. If you don't need the mulching effect, get the straightest blade with the the least amount of lift. Your repair shop should know what I'm talking about. RScott

The belt is worn. When you replace the belt, check all the pulleys including the tensioning pulley to see that they are all turning free and aligned. The spindles for the blades have bearings and can be cleaned and greased. The tensioning pulley just needs a drop of oil and needs to be replaced if it isn't turning freely. Mine did the same thing except the belt would roll over and jump off. A new belt solved the problem.

website for owners's manual for Lowe's 46in deck riding lawn mower?

sarahdr197

Answer
Noma made some for lowes, never heard of ayp making them for them, but mtd has certainly made some as well.... (noma was shortly bought soon after by murray and discontinued, so you may not know them)... if it is a noma (I own one), there should be a silver sticker on the frame, around the hitch point at the back, if its still stuck on. YOU MAY get the manual then from the murray website... MAY though since they went under and acquired by briggs, only parts are being made, if its a mtd the mtd website ( www.mtdproducts.com ) you might find it there...

Which walk-behind lawn mower has the largest blade / cutting area?

Neerdowell

I need a new lawn mower, as both my riding mower and push mower are requiring too many trips to the repair shop to stay running. I can't afford a new riding mower, but I hate the small cutting area that a walk-behind mower usually offers. Is there a walk-behind lawn mower out there that has an extra large blade that provides a much larger cutting area?
Okay, I guess I should've said consumer grade walk-behind mower. If I could afford a commercial grade walk-behind mower, I would be able to afford a consumer grade riding mower, which I can't.

Answer
There are several brands of lawn mowers that have a 22" cutting area. That is about as large as you will find on a standard push lawn mower. From there, they go down to 21, 20, and even 17". You can find one of the 22" mowers at Home Depot or Lowe's or some other store like that. To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.

Should extended warranty be bought for a new riding lawn mower?

T E

The manufacturer has a 2 yrs warranty for major components (engine, transmission), and 90 days for everything else. The retailer sells an extended warranty of 2 additional years (i.e., 4 yrs in total) for 10% of the price.

A riding lawn mower is one of the easiest broken down household items?

Answer
I've never seen an extended warranty that was worth the price. Any defects are going to break within the first 90 days. After that, it's up to you to keep up with your regular maintenance. If you do, the parts that are covered by the warranty probably won't break. The parts that do need to be replaced are the parts subject to normal wear and tear, and won't be covered anyway. Hope this helps.

when is the best time to purchase a riding lawnmower?

Richard

a cub cadet riding lawnmower

Answer
I can't speak for lawnmowers specifically, but generally the best time to buy a product with a seasonal usage is right after the season has ended and no one needs one. That's usually when retailers will cut prices to get rid of that year's stock. So while mowing season ended a month or two ago (depending on where you live) there's probably some good deals still to be had right now.

rules on ride on lawnmowers?

carol e

is there a law about what time you cannot operate a ride on lawn mower on the weekends

Answer
Different rules in different towns. Usually has to do with noise rules. No power lawn mowers, weed whackers, gas blowers, power washers, etc. If there is no rule in your town, at least be considerate of your neighbor trying to sleep.
Or is it that dork who is waking you up at 6:00 am by mowing? There are ways to deal with that, which I will leave to your imagination.
