I have a riding lawn mower but I think I will need a new engine so I have a gas engine but how much would it cost to put in a diesel engine?
Well are there lawn mowers that even run on diesel?

Answer
Not worth the conversion, just get a new motor or mower. And yes they do make diesel lawn tractors

How much can you sell a riding lawn mower with a bad engine for?

Olunde

We have a Troy Built riding lawn mower that needs some engine work. We don't feel like messing around with the repairs, so we were just going to sell the body.

What would be a reasonable price to ask for?

Answer
I like the other answer about subtracting 10% for each year and then the cost of the repairs - but I would argue that you may still have trouble selling it at that price.

When I put myself in the buyer's position, I can't help but think that there should also be an additional incentive for me to purchase a non-working item. Yes, theoritically, I would be made whole by deducting the cost to repair - but that is just an estimate. If I'm going to take the additional risk of buying a non-working item then there should be a little extra cushion in it. If for nothing else than to protect me in the event that the repairs go over budget.

How about
- Take 10% off for each year
- Take off the cost to repair
- Take off an additional 5 to 10% since it isn't currently working.

how do i sharpen the blades on my lawn tractor?

EpicRacer

i followed the instructions on about.com and my tractor still isn't cutting good enough. i have to mow over the yard twice because the blade doesn't cut evenly.

whats the proper way to sharpen mower blades? i used a file the first time (a couple weeks ago). can i sharpen them with a bench grinder? do they need to be really sharp? when i bought new blades last year, they weren't really sharp, but they cut great.

can someone recommend a good set of blades? i have a 42" deck. i mow about 4 acres (4 seperate yards).
theres only one way to put the blades on my deck, so i know they are installed correctly. i would rather do the work myself since im on a tight budget.

Answer
Your first order of business should be checking to see if you might've mounted the blades on upside down. This is really easy to do, and makes cutting the lawn impossible. However, if you still can't find the problem, read the following paragraph.

I have a similar sized lawn and a similar sized mower. What we use is a bench grinder. Using the grinder allows me to get an extremely sharp, quality edge on my blades. Just be careful that you're not overzealous with the grinder, though.

Merchandise was repoed after it was paid for. What can I do?

andrew's m

My husband worked for a furniture/appliance store for 5 years and was good friends with the Manager. My husband asked the Manager if he could cut him a deal on a good riding lawn mower since we had just bought a home with a big yard. The Manager told him that he had just repoed a riding mower and he could have it for the amount owed on it ($600.00). We paid $200.00 down and a couple weeks later paid the remaining $400.00. We have the receipt showing that we paid $600.00 however because this was done under the table (manager and my husband were good friends) no official contract was ever drawn up. My husband a short while later quit the store on good terms for a better paying job. All was well, no hard feelings. Yesterday, a YEAR after we purchased the mower, the Manager shows up at my house knowing my husband is working and not at home and states he has to repo the mower because we havent made payments in a year! I argued with him that we paid it off and he knows that we did. He just said "sorry" and loaded it up and took it! When my husband worked at the store, he did collections. The stores collection process starts when you are two payments behind, that is when the phone calls, home visits, collection letters ect start. We never received one phone call, one letter, one visit. No one even mentioned anything about this mower until he just showed up to take it out of the blue a year later. My question is, what can we do since we had no contract? Did he basically just steal $600.00 from us?

Answer
No, he "stole" your lawn mower. But since you (apparently) gave him access to it rather than call the cops, you'll most likely have to take it up in civil court now.

Won't be easy without a contract, but good luck. :)

I need a used gas power lawnmower. Money is tight for new one and repairing my old would cost more.

usually what would be the average price for a used lawnmower?

Answer
Don't most people use their lawnmowers until they don't work? As you have seen, repairing an old lawn mower costs more than it's worth, and someone who does repairs to sell used lawnmowers would have a hard time recouping their investment in parts and time.

Try looking at small hardware stores, etc. There was a mom and pop hardware/plumbing shop where I used to live (not in SB) that had used everything, the old dude would fix everything, it seemed more of a hobby, but they retired. Maybe Goodwill or other similar store?

Sears is having a lawnmower sale this weekend.

Good luck!

a friend of mine is selling a old ride behind lawn mower and i don't know what to pay for it. i have to make an offer.

Answer
Sorry. I disagree. It depends on the machine. I bought a 1969 John Deere with a 10hp Kolher engine. It was, and still is, well maintained and it works better and has fewer problems than my 5 year old Craftsman which seems to need some type of repair every year. I paid $500 for the JD and $1200 for the Craftsman with a Briggs & Stratton engine. The B&S is not known for its long life, so see what type of engine it has. If it's a Briggs or Tecumseh, offer less. If its a Kohler, Onan, or Honda, it's worth more. If I had to choose between my 2 mowers, without a doubt it would be the 40 year old JD. Old does not necessarily mean junk.

my lawn mower has issues. somehow the blades are messing up and grinding together and making a terrible noise. I need to buy a new one now.

does anyone know how much the average price for a used lawn mower is?

thanks so much!

Answer
I bet your could get one for as low as 50 bucks at a pawn shop... Here is a link to the cheapest one at walmart for 129.99

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10854262

Weigh your options... If you have the money buy the new one...it will pay for itself in a couple months in comparison to if you paid someone to mow...

Mowers with at least 5.5 horsepower perform just as well as mowers with stronger engines. So keep that in mind. Also a self propelled mower would be nice. (one that drives itself with no need to push the mower)

What are some of the best reel push mowers available?

Matthew

I have a couple of lawns lined up to cut. I want a push mower for the exercise and the fact that I won't have to pay for gasoline. I've just heard that some of them don't cut very well no matter how much muscle you put into it. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
I'm in the market for one too. We bought one second-hand to check things out and get a real feel for this type of mower. Here's what we learned. Most reel push mowers are good to maintain short grass, which is no good if you want to control weeds. I want my lawn to be 3+ inch high. When the product specs say you'll need to sharpen once a season, it means 2-4 times a season. The blades on our Great States mower were sharpened before our first mow and after mowing three times, the ends of the blades of grass looked riped (and our lawn is small - 1200 sq ft). If you're obsessive about having your lawn cut evenly (like me), you'll get your cardio workout in by mowing your lawn (and it still might not end up even- argh!). My approach to mowing the lawn is I don't mind mowing 3 times a week, if I only have to do it for 10 minutes each time; but the results have to be clean and even.
The main thing to remember is if your lawn is level everywhere (ie no pot-holes anywhere) and free of hidden rocks and twigs, you can consider a manual reel mower. But if it's not, then you'll either have to fix it or restrict yourself to the more expensive manual reel mowers. However, don't confuse price with quality: we thought that a Brill was the top of the line. Not so. First figure out what kind of lawn you have and the kind you'd like to have and maintain, and what you're willing to put up with, then choose the best mower for you.
After some research, I've decided that the Fiskars Momentum is the one for me. Problem is, it's not cheap. Lowes has them at the cheapest price around: $200. Or maybe I'll go for the Scott reel mower for $130. Which boils the question down to: will I be irritated at myself the next four years for saving $70 on the initial price of the mower? How much do I value 4 years of peace of mind, little to no sharpening of the blades and an easier mowing job for an evenly cut lawn? Kind of a biased question, I know.
You might decide to do like we did and check craigslist for a second hand mower to figure out what you like and what your lawn is like to mow. Then, when you're ready to get "the one", go for it and sell old one again on craigslist for a slightly lower price than what you paid for. Turned out to be a pretty cheap "rental" for us.
Here are the sites that are helping me choose:

Something that adjusts to my walking pace and has a bag (side or rear) Also can someone explain what the difference a side or rear bag would male.
My lot is a flat lot about 0.3 acres. My budget is around 400-600 dollars

Answer
Troy-Bilt $379.00
7.75 Torque 21" Self-Propelled Gas Mower
Item #: 303531 Model: TB340 XP

This is a very good mower where the self-propelled speed is determined by how fast you walk. Its a commercial mower at a home owner's price.

Rear bag verse side bag: Well first off its hard to find a side bagger these days, they're just not popular and here's why. Rear baggers were designed so that if you have several obstacles in your yard, (trees ETC...) you can maneuver around them from either side without changing directions, the down side is side bags are a little larger (not much). That's about it.

I bought my house in August 2011 and lawn was brown--I thought it was dead, but the majority has come back green. I have some thin/bare spots, and was curious about overseeing. Do I mow it shorter than normal before overseeing? Also, should I spray weed control prior to overseeing?

Answer
It is suggested to cut your lawn shorter in the Fall and longer in the Summer. I've been following my own rule and keep the mower set at 2" all the time and I have a full thick lawn. DO NOT spray any weed killer if you're going to seed. The weed killer will also kill any seedlings. This is the right time of the year to put down Winter fertilizer and seed (overseed). Just make sure you also water. Once the new grass has established itself then you can put down weed killer.

I am in Need of Help starting my Toro 190cc Lawn Mower.?

Julius

So I bought this Briggs & Stratton Toro 190cc (Guaranteed to start)
recycler model # 12000 lawn mower last year, and it wont start...
We recently purchased this just last year in 2011 and we know that we have given it poor maintenance because it claims to be guaranteed to start with just one Tug of the cord.
I say poor maintenance because we let it sit in a shed with gas and oil still in it...i was told that's not a good idea?
We only use it in the summer obviously...it has regular Gas.
We bought power care prem. 4 cycle lawn mower engine oil (SAE 30 460-478) is this the best oil? if not please advise me on a better suited oil for this machine.
Now...people have been telling us to drain the oil because we left it in a shed for an entire year, we did this and we got it to start temporarily but it shut off.
what are we doing wrong? again, this is brand new and we rarely use it. should we drain the gas too?
thanx guys !.... it was the gas! ..i emptied it and waited a while and put in new gas ...

Answer
Carefully ..

Un screw the bolt that is under the carburetor bowl. This is where the gasoline sits as it is getting ready to go into the firing chamber.

Some gasoline will come out as you loosen the bolt and open the hole up under the carburetor.

Also you want to drain out -- quickly.. the old gas ....that is in this small bowl.. (ONLY).. as it might have some moisture (water) mixed in the carb.. as it has been sitting and going through "condensation".

the put the bolt back into the hole and tighten it up with the wrench.

Then push the rubber .. primer bulb.. that primes the carburetor.

Then pull the rope ... it should start up.

It should start.. if not.. unconnect the spark plug wire and unscrew the spark plug.
Take some sand paper and sand down the spark "TIP" where the spark "FIRES".. then VERY gently pour some gas onto the plug. Then put the plug back into the engine with the wrench.

Then pull the string.. it should start.

If all this does not work.. it is too late.. and you need to take it to the shop for a diagnostic repair.

Q. O.k here is the deal my husband and I were trying to buy the property behind our house. For the last 12 years we have kept the half an acre nearest out home cut ( to keep away mice and snakes since we live in the country) Well we called to see if they would sell it to us because they once were considering selling the whole thing to my dad. Any way they refuse to sell which is fine but here is the problem(s) my mom went walk through the part we don't cut (looking for missing duck) and saw 4 baby water mocassins! I have two small children so naturally i'm concerned. Also my lawn mower broke (by the way I have to cut my acre and a little less than half of theirs so now I have to pay someone to mow THEIR YARD!! So my real question is how do I go about telling them to cut their yard without looking like i'm being spiteful since they wouldnt sell it to me. (if they care about it so much why won't they take care of it?)

Answer
Go to a local farm& ranch supply,or maybe your local hardware store. Pick up some remedy spray and apply to the section of land they wont mow. This stuff killls to the dirt and last about one year. Another thing you can do, is spread thru a simple granular spreader Rock Salt, the salt kills grass weeds etc and is cheaper that the product i listed.

I did this will my back hal acre

I need a 2nd job but it's so hard to find one. I'm only 20 years old and have on had 2 previous jobs...

fallen_con

I have been applying everywhere and I haven't gotten a call back. Is it better to apply in person at the place or is applying online just the same? I have only applied online everywhere. I am only looking for these types of jobs: Front desk receptionist for a hotel, hostess at a restaurant, or a secretary job at an office. I have no prior experience which makes it hard for me when the employers want someone with experience. But how do I even start out and get experience for later if no one will hire me in these types of jobs? My only previous jobs are working at a movie theater as a concessionist, and now I'm assistant Pre-K teacher at a school. But I need a weekday nights and weekend job.
So really, my questions are: What are the best ways to apply for a job (talk to the hiring manager myself?), how can I get the required experience for these jobs if no one will hire me for the 1st time? And if there are any other suggestions for jobs for me that would be easy to find?

Answer
Don't limit yourself. Best way to make cash fast is start your own business and mowing lawns is it. Of course, you would have to have a way to move the mower/trimmer/blower around but you can make very good money. When you apply for a job, have a resume. Go to the library and get a book on power resumes. Take one with you when you apply. Make an appointment and go in. Be sure the manager is there when you do. When you're done, do your best to hand your resume to the manager and tell him you look forward to hearing from him/her. Be dressed for the job when you go in, be very neat & clean, shine your shoes, be very polite and well mannered. Be sure your application is very neat and completely filled out. Have them tack your resume to the back. You may not have experience in that particular job, but a receptionist deals with people much like you did at the concession stand. As a teacher you are a responsible person that deal with parents as well as children. The power resume book I got taught me how to pull the strengths out of my previous jobs and apply them to the position I was trying to get. You will be amazed just how much you have to offer them when you are through. Lots of Luck.

I pulled the rope to start my lawn mower and it broke how do I fix it

Answer
This Is One Of The Easiest Repairs For Mowers. I've Done It Several Times. Remove The Plastic Shroud From The Motor, You'll See On Of Two Things Either The Coil Assembly Will be In The Shroud Or It Will Be Attached To The Motor. If It's Attached To The Motor Remove It. Once You Have It Removed You'll See The End Of The Pull Cord Tied In A Knot, Pull On It To Give It Some Slack Then Hold It So It Doesn't Pull Back In In, Then Cut It And Pull The Remaining Cord Out. Then Measure As Best You Can The Old Cord To The New Cord And Cut It To Size. Then Line Up The The Hole For The Cord On Top Of The Assembly With The Hole In The Coil, Thread The New Cord Through Both Holes Then Tie The End In A Knot And Scorch It With A Lighter To Make Sure It Holds. Then Slowly Let The Cord Rewind Itself. And Reattach The Shroud And Then Don't Ever By That Brand Again.

Answer
Technically is not legal if the vehicle is not "street legal" (plate number, lights, insurance, and so on).

But some local laws make some exceptions (it depends on the jurisdiction) if he travels a "short distance" like from his home to the home around the corner.

Havent decided yet on what to buy.A regular riding lawn mower or a zero turn lawn mower.I could go either way and i have thought of some advantages and disadvantages of both but what do you think???

What are the pros and cons of both style lawn mowers? If you got an opinion, lets hear it!!!

Answer
My grandfather is a Snapper fan for as long as I can remember. He bought a blue lawnmower about a year ago that turned on a dime. After 1 summer he decided to get rid of it. He said it wasn't as pretty of a cut as the Snapper. He said it bounces to much.

Does an electric cordless lawn mower work as well as a gas powered one?

best lawn mower electric or gas image

Anna

I am needing a new lawn mower and with the price of gas, I was wondering if the electric ones are any good. I can't imagine having a cord attached, so I would want a rechargable one.

Answer
In the right circumstances a cordless will work fine. No, they're not as powerful as gas, and if you have a really large area to cut, one charge won't do it. You can buy extra batteries though they're not cheap. I have a 24v cordless and am very happy with it. It's light and easy to push. It's quiet enough that I can cut the lawn without making the neighbours close their windows. I cut about 100' x100' on one charge unless the grass is wet or too long. It cuts over small branches in the lawn with no trouble. I'd be using a lot of extension cord to reach all the areas with a corded one, and I hate the noise of gas ones, futzing around with fuel, and yanking on the cord.

What is the difference between propelled, electric and gas Lawn mower?

I am looking to purchase a lawn mower with a collector and have no clue what the differenc is in each of the 3 types that seem to be out there.

Answer
Self-Propelled means that there's a mechanism that helps the mower go forward when you push on the handle. It reduces the work you have to do in pushing that SOB all over your lawn...which is nice, but doesn't make it completely without effort, either.

Electric mowers can come in two flavors: Corded, and battery-operated. Legend says that the battery operated ones have come a long way. We had one 10 years ago, and you had to REALLY keep up on your lawn, or the battery-op mower just couldn't hack through the grass, especially in the early summer when it rains a lot and the grass goes insane. Corded ones have plenty of zip and power, you just have to make sure you don't run over the extension cord. We never had a collection bag on ours, so I don't know about that part of it. You also never have trouble starting one up, and you don't have to tinker with stupid stuff like spark plugs or small engine repair. Or gasoline, for that matter. They also tend to be lighter, weight-wise.

Gas lawn mowers are what most people have...these are small engines that run on gas, so you'll have to keep that around. Most of them have collection bags which will need to be emptied two or three times per mowing, even in a small yard like ours. They still require maintenance; my hubby isn't very handy (ok, he's a handyman's idiot), and I know nothing about small engines, so I have to take my mower to someone competent to have the blade sharpened and engine tuned and the whole thing lubed and such.

Ask your neighbors if they know anyone who does lawn mower maintenance and then ask the mower guy if he has mower recommendations. We took ours in and he said, "A Snapper? I never see those things in here!" We took that as a good sign. Hubby was dumb enough to mow wet grass and then not clean out the underside, so it solidified into a concrete mass and the blade wouldn't turn. Don't do that.

Consumer Reports seems to like the following mowers:

Gas-powered push models:
Lawn-Boy 10640
Cub Cadet 11A-18MC

Corded electric push models:
Black & Decker MM875

Cordless electric push models:
Black & Decker CMM1200

Self-Propelled Models:
Toro Recycler 20333
Toro Recycler 20332
Toro Recycler 20330
Craftsman 37435
Lawn-Boy 10641
Craftsman 37624

Good luck!!

How do I adjust the belt tension?

JON Z

I have a new, 1 year old Craftsman 21HP lawn tractor with a 46" deck.
This year the belt keeps falling off.
My little owners manual says that there is no adjustment???
Can't be true.
Need you Craftsmen guys help on this one.

Answer
Yep it's true that you have no adjustment. The tension is created by springs that hold the belt tight when you engage the blades.

The belt may have stretched to the point that it is so loose when you disengage the blades that it falls off the pulleys. That's one idea but I don't think it's very likely. Belts can stretch but the amount it would have to stretch to make it that loose would be considerable. So, although plausible I doubt that's your problem.

First off take a look around on the deck at the mechanism that holds the pulleys that move to apply tension to the belt. This mechanism probably has a spring that holds it in certain positions as you move the engagement lever. Make sure a spring hasn't come loose or is missing. Even with the deck disengaged there will be some pressure on the belt to keep it in place.

If it's not a spring on that mechanism carefully inspect everywhere along the path of the belt and see if some other pulley/guide is missing a spring or the belt has jumped off of a pulley creating slack. There are also metal guides that sit a fraction of an inch adjacent to some pulleys that don't allow the belt to slip off. If one of these is bent or missing the belt can easily come off.

If you have an electric clutch that engages the deck you won't have a engagement lever or mechanism on the deck itself. The tension is always applied and the electric clutch engages/disengages the drive pulley. But the issues are still similar. Look all around to see if any springs that hold any guide/tension pulleys are dangling or missing or the belt is not on the proper path and is off a pulley.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

YardKing was made by Murray and they went out of business. The company that bought them out, their web site does not help much. Where can I get parts for my 46" lawn tractor?

One of the biggest places to find Yard King parts is at the reference below. Jacks Small Parts has a huge selection. I've ordered from them before and have never been disappointed.
